I have read about changes to the Portuguese highway code requirements.
Does anyone know exactly what the requirements are and how they apply to tourists/non residents.
Also I read about the Police checks in CVO recently re drink drivers etc what exactly is the alcohol limit- if there is one -or is it zero

Alco limit 0,5 - Dangerous driving
Alco limit 0.8 - Very dangerous driving
Alco limit 1.2 - Crime

Most alterations are increases in fines or agravation of existing transgressions.

Every vehicle must have a reflective jacket in accordance with EN 471 and EN 1150

The minimum speed on the motorway has been increased to 50KmH.

Use of mobiles without hands-free or headset is now classed as dangerous driving and can cost up to €600.

Fines have to be paid on the spot (minimum amounts between €60 and €120) - foreign drivers will probably have to pay up the total amount.

Disrespecting stop signs or red lights has been upped to very dangerous driving.

The complete list of alterations can be found in portuguese at www.dgv.pt if somebody has the time/patience to translate it - possibly AFPOP will have an english version available at some point.

Thanks Digger - you have cleared up a mystery for me. In Lisbon last week almost every street trader and shop was selling reflective vests. We just couldn't work it out - it became a bit of a joke in the end. I almost felt I should buy one...

Use of a retro-reflecting vest
In addition to use of the reflective triangle to signal danger, it will be compulsory to use a retro-reflecting vest. Its color and characteristics have not yet been determined. Failure to use one can incur a fine of €120 to €600.

Yes,does this hi-vis jacket lark cover hire cars too?Are the hire companies supplying these jackets in the car you hire?

Worth noting that most larger towns [in UK] have an outlet that sells safety equip for road or site workers, they sell jackets tabards and waist coats to the EN standards. A Hi-Vi waist coat is inexpensive, extremely light, can be used at home if you break down on a busy road etc.
If you have a dark shirt and trousers on as you kneel to change a wheel you may be "invisible" to traffic and may join the roadkill list.
The Hi - Vi retroflective vests will "illuminate" you to oncoming traffic at hundreds of metres. Your life must be worth 10euros or so.
The full jacket will also keep wind out and rain off, lets face it , cars don't go wrong on clear dry roads when the sun is out do they.
