The government announced this week that smoking is to be banned at restaurants, bars, discotheques, health units, offices, centres for the elderly and on public transport services.



The legislation, announced by the Health Minister on Wednesday, No Smoking Day, is aimed to improve and “protect the health of non-smokers against involuntary exposure or passive smoking”.



The new legislation, which was drawn up over a year ago, is to come into force within six months, and should be approved by the Council of Ministers later this month, the government revealed.

All the bars in Portugal might as well close there doors

... but i don't want to quit!!!!
so lets establish a private club with affordable memebership fees and at min a bar, maybe also a restaurant open for dinner only to keep costs low at first.
by this there's also a possi to exclude rude people.....
maybe there are also others interested and if the smoking ban will really apply not only to retaurants but also to bars and similar, it could also be a business opportunity!!!

Yeah definitely. Jazz in a smoke free zone is like listening to the Rolling Stones without amplifiers.

The clubhouse at vale de milho golf club is installing a independent smoking area, with special air filters.

At last Smoking will be banned in Restaraunts etc.......why should I put up with somebody elses filthy habit. shortening my life.......You see I have no choice unless I stay at home..you smokers do.........Please go outside or quit........It works well incertain States in US...it can work here and its only a matter of time...smoking WILL be phased out.........

Ireland introduced similar legislation earlier this year. Dublin has lost none of it's character and all the bars provide heated and covered outdoor facilities for smoking. In more rural areas the locals make their own rules and the Garda (police) use discretion. Seems to work well. The big losers are the government who's tax revenue has dipped in line with cigarette consumption.
