• A gardening question for you

Hi Everyone

I've bought an apartment that has a balcony that has sun until midday and is then in the shade.

Has anyone any ideas on what can grow in pots in this situation that won't grow too leggy because of the shade? Some climbers would be fine.

I'm sure lots of you know the answer to this! Look forward to your replies.

I never tried it….but I was told you can grow weed next to your tomato plants and your nosey neighbours will never know……

Hello Jan,
There is a pretty..but small climber ..that will be fine in pot for your balcony...
'Mandevilla splendens' (Dipladenia splendens)
dark green oval leaves with rose pink trumpet flowers.Youll get loads of flowers all summer long

you can also take cuttings..it roots very easily.The smallest will bear lotsa flowers..
I love Plumbago..beautiful blue flowers..and tho its recommended for full sun...I know an old one in Algarve(cvo) that does very well and its in shade quite a bit of the day!
Brugmansia..yellow trumpet flowers that will look lovely when your balcony is shaded(and have some fragrance too)
In my time there..I grew many things in pots/containers..including Solanum jasminoides(for a tumbly effect) looks good alongside potgrown red or purply Bougainvillea.
How big is your balcony? ..on my hol last month saw even a relatively small one looking absolutely gorgeous with just pots of perlargonium/petunia/heuchera..
Jan..youre making me envious! My Lincs garden has leaves turning brown & falling..but.. I still have some roses and the cosmia are looking really lovely!

Hi Ellie

Thanks so much for all those ideas, you're a gem! - and obviously a keen gardener too. I'm in Cornwall at the moment but hope to move out in about a month's time. Will plants be safe over the winter or should I buy them in the spring?

Anyone know any good nurseries or garden centres in the area?
