The 'Iberian Wolf Recovery Centre' covers 17 hectares in a beautiful peaceful valley near Lisbon. Here, staff and volunteers look after rescued wolves.
The loss of habitat..persecution/hunting...disease means their numbers have diminished. earlier in the last century there were wolves throughout Portugal but now there are about 200 in the north of the country.
If nothing is done about this situation the wolf will eventually become extinct in Portugal.

These often maligned creatures are family animals like ourselves and interact warmly with each other. They will take turns to look after each others pups.
I just wanted to bring this worthwhile cause to the forum's attentions;to those of you who don't just see Portugal as a place for holidays but who care about it's wildlife..its animals & plants :)
You can help by donations or become a member or even adopt a wolf!(I adopted a wolf pack in Poland last year...£10..I get up dates on their progress& pics)
This is the address to write to if you are interested:

 Thanks for this Ellie, I will definitely adopt a wolf if I can. I think they are one of the most beautiful creatures in the wild.

Good for you Lesley :)
Im hoping that G or Steen will be able to post the 2 pics here...2 wolves that have been rescued & helped by the I.W.R.C.....a pup called 'Nimrod' and full grown Iberian wolf 'Manchas'.
I dont know how to put pics on here..and I like to ask if its okay first :)
Dont know if you remember but we had quite a discussion here (think it was before Xmas) not only on wolves but the Iberian Lynx too. (theres a centre for these too in southern Spain but dont think theyve had much success with breeding)Think these cats have virtually disappeared from Algarve/Portugal......mainly through loss of habitat......man marching on..ever encroaching /taking over countryside.
Sad isn't it?....as you rightly say..beautiful creatures.... that have a place/ a right to be in this world as much as ourselves.....
