Sorry guys, that's going to be the headline on Monday morning in your newspapers as you all rue the host's going out of the competition  It's a shame as this year would have probably been Portugal's best chance at an honour with the entire country behind them, although I'm not sure if it is, given the high number of empty seats at the Russia game last night.

Still at least you beat the Russians, which is a mini achievement so it wasn't a complete failure, although to lose to the Greeks??

Of course Spain allowed the Greeks to draw last night so that they would also finish above Figo and Co on at least 4 points and I think we can all safely predict a comfortable 3-0 win for Es-pa-ña on Sunday.

Unless of course you think otherwise............

Portugal back on track after 2-0 win; Russia face exit

Updated: 2004-06-17 08:49

Portugal have resurrected their Euro 2004 hopes, ending those of 10-man Russia with a 2-0 victory but will still need to beat neighbours Spain in their final group game to reach the quarter-finals.
Damn! ...I put my money on the Dallas Cowboys.

Hey Cowboy, in Europe we have a tournament for European countries and any country can enter and could in theory at least win.

So, what about that "world series" baseball nonsense. A world series that the USA invented so they could not lose to someone else.

................and then you let Canada play.

Not many biting here......... Maybe the bait wasn't juicy enough or perhaps you all really do agree with me. One of the poorest Portuguese sides I've ever seen  and I just hope they aren't embarrassed when Spain score their 6th on the night.......

It has been widely misreported that the World Series was named after the sponsor, the newspaper The New York World. It didn't, and it wasnt.

It was a grand name to call the matches between the two US champions of the National league and the American Association. Since there were only these two champions and they were both champions of the US they had to come up with a more grandiose title, thus the World Championship Series. It was envisaged however that the sport of Baseball would spread around the world and that in time there would truly be a World Series. As everybody now knows the rest of the world had more sense

Well done Portugal on reaching the quarter finals (could be England next). BBC experts thought it was a very poor game - personally I enjoyed it especially Ronaldo's first half performance. Last half hour was an edge of the seat job especially when Portugal misssed the 'one on one' chances. Good luck in the next round, but divided loyalties if they meet England - I think the tournament will really catch fire now!

Regards to all in CVO - bet it will be rather noisy in The Square tonight!

Congratulations Portugal! :)
We certainly didnt think it was a poor game.. and right to the last seconds it was heart-stopping as it seemed that Spain might just equalize!
Strangely..I felt more passionate about Portugal winning tonight than I did for England the other night......and ..
if they should meet with England in the final... Ill be happy whoever wins :?

Interesting isn't it. I thought it was a really good game, couldn't understand what the commentators had been watching. What you see depends a lot on whether you are supporting one or other side.

I suppose the outcome on Monday depends on whether Owen can bounce another ball on Fatty Arbuckle's head. Should be worth 100 million then.

 Well Anchovy, words like 'don't count your chickens......' come to mind!!
Well done Portugal, a good game when you consider everyone said that Spain would wipe the floor with Portugal. I thought it should have been
3 - 0 with the two missed goals towards the end.
What would I do if it ends up England v Portugal? who do I support?
Bet there was a lot of celebrating in Lisbon last night 8)
