"A thief died on Sunday after being caught robbing a house at the entrance of Vilamoura, by the locals. The case happened by 04.00. A British couple , in their 50s , and son , about 20 , sensed the man inside the villa , already with some goods in his pockets - including the key of a Jaguar car. Father and son were able to immobilize the thief, while the woman telephoned the GNR . When the military arrived, the assailant was still alive , with one of Britain to hold him in the back , with one arm around the neck ( at the withers ) . By the time the GNR were preparing to put the handcuffs , the man collapsed and died . The body was taken for autopsy to determine the cause of death ."

The family involved are from Scotland, moving to Portugal several years ago.
According to a media report, the family is currently in hiding amid fears there could be some sort of reprisal attack.
It has been reported that the deceased (Paulo Brito) had criminal connections and this was the concern. It's claimed he served eight years for violent robberies, being released from prison less than a year ago. His sister claimed, that although her brother had a troubled past and mental health problems, he was well liked in the community of Quarteira.
