Hi, anyone know how far 15 euro credit will get us on the A22. Hiring a car from Algarve Driver and over for 2 weeks. probably only use the A22 to get from airport & back. It it worth adding a bit more credit? - Hope its stopped raining.

Seem to think that Faro to Carvoeiro isroughly €6 one way. Sure someone will correct me if that's wrong!!!

Thanks smudger. Might just add another 10 euros just in case we do use the A22 whilst in CVO

Reduced the charges last year, but again as per Smudger, don't have hard figures. If you leave the motorway at Alcantarilha junction you will save €1 (€1.10 ) by not travelling on to Lagoa junction (6). at €15 you have more than enough to use the motorway over an back and perhaps even with trip to Lagos.

another edit: I make that €3.50 now to travel from airport to Lagoa turnoff or €2.55 for Ancantirilha. Don't recall it being that cheap before

Those numbers are correct.

Now, lets do some arithmetic:

Cost of a transponder: €27.00 per car, once off.
Charge to tourists: €5.00 per rental.
Lets say each car rents out 10 times per year
Profit per car in year 1: €23.00
Profit per car in subsequent years: €50.00 per year

Toll charges

You do one round trip per holiday and use up €7.00
Rental company charges you: €15.00
Additional profit per rental: Up to €8.00
Additional profit per year per car: up to €80.00

Even after allowing a little for admin and set up, don't you feel sorry for the rental companies who had to put up with these tolls being foisted upon them ?

With a uk registered car has anybody had a fine for use of A22 sent to their U.K. Address .

Thanks for info. Maybe just go with the 15 euros as we don't intend driving too far when in CVO. Looking forward to coming over. Roll on 25th.

When I used to pay the one way trip in the post office in cvo I think it was just over 4 euros so I think that 15 euros gives some headroom for some other trip which is what we've done this year.

Well said. The amount is not an issue - wasting valuable holiday time trying to pay toll fees is!

I would be surprised if the authorities were to chase up small arrears in the UK but they are certainly taking action locally. I am aware of one expat who drives a UK registered car being pulled up on the motorway for non payment of tolls and penalties. Immediate payment of a substantial sum was required or the vehicle would have been confiscated.The police did however drive him to an ATM to get the cash.
Number plate recognition makes it easy to identify cars which have accumulated arrears so if you have not paid in the past and bring your car back again the past may yet catch up with you.

That's an interesting story because I was talking to a Portuguese guy who works on the tolls, and he told me that the computers on the system weren't programmed to read foreign number plates.
I was surprised by this, because in today's world that isn't a great leap in technology....but there you go.....
Where they will stop you is on the Spanish border crossing and direct you to the pre-pay machines.

The French DO however have the technology, and stories of people being "frog marched" to ATMs there, are legion!

I know the person who was pulled over so this is not a popular myth. He was presented with a list of outstanding charges and penalties for non payment. He clearly was not a random stop so it will be interesting to see whether other regular users of the motorway with UK registered vehicles who have not paid charges encounter problems. If there is not number plate recognition for foreign plates ( which seems rather incredible to me) then patrol vehicles have been issued with lists of vehicles to look out for based on pictures taken when toll points are passed.
