High waves

Just got back from the cliffs near Algar Seco which are taking a battering from some heavy waves. The area is soaked with spray which is rising above the height of the cliffs as the waves hit the coastline. Some impressive rollers going in to CVO beach and sea water has made it into the square. Lots of people have turned out to have a look and take photos.

My daughter emailed a picture last night with no subject matter. Did not think at 6am when loomed at emails it was CVO until I looked at FB page. We left CVO 6.15pm for Faro and NO sign of bad weather. Shocked is an understatement.

I had to stop fishing on New Years day as the waves were much too high but nothing compared to yesterday.
At Ferragudo the breakwater was flooded, spray as high as the lighthouse.
Even the locals were mpressed.
If we had strong winds to go with the storm who knows what damage could have been done.
It will be iinteresting to see which beaches still have sand.

Unfortunately the restaurant at Molhe beach was destroyed by the huge waves. So sad to see the devastation that has been caused. The locals are saying there maybe more damage and big waves again tonight. :(

Barca in the square has been wrecked, doors and windows smashed and contents were seen washing around the square at the height of the waves.
The timber walkway by the toilets is badly damaged.
CVO appears to have got off lightly compared to other coastal resorts in the western Algarve and the west coast of Portugal.

Wasn't just the western Algarve and west coast, it happened all the way beyond Porto destroying beach bars and restaurants. It was major news on TV last night

So if it was bad from the North and travelled down the country is it a tsunami or bad weather the country over? I understand the beach bars are wrecked. I presume Smilers was OK.
