We are coming out to Carvoeiro in early August. Since this will be the first time that we've visited in that month, could anybody let me know if there is a problem with mosquitos. Any responses would be appreciated.

They are a fact of life , some areas are worse than others, we use those plug in repellants and if too bad shut the bedroom windows and turn on the aircon.

Really a sort of hit and miss situation. Apart from the items EMM suggested and they do work especially those plug-in devices that allure and kills the buggers, best to use those foiled repellant wipes on your arms and legs as the pests will soon steer clear away.

Some people say it's an old wives' tale but in recent years I've taken a good Vitamin B complex for about three weeks before I go away, and while I'm away, and I don't seem to get bitten (I used to). My wife swears by Brewer's Yeast - Vitamin B in another form.

A few years ago in Croatia I did this and the mozzies left me alone but bit the others in my party to bu**ery. My chum, who literally still bears the scars from that experience, says it's concidence, and that I'm simply as unattractive to mosquitoes as I am to women. He could be right of course, but until I start getting bitten again I'll consider it a good investment.

We've had this topic at length before - seems it depends on the area and person - we have rarely seen a mosquito in the Solferias area in 10 years, in the valley they seem to be more prevalent, certainly in april/may. Marmite, gin & tonic, vitamin B etc have all been suggested. I rarely get bitten by anything but my wife is very susceptible and uses a standard repellant from boots - spray job called bugsodoff or something like that

You can buy Deet 'off' from Amazon dont know if any shops in the UK sell it but it does work really well.

fill up with water and give a good shake

shouldn't you add Galliano and vodka, ice and a slice - looks a good cocktail to me

Eating garlic is supposed to be another turn off to them - taints sweat & blood. They seem to be most problematic when it is warm & wet. I rarely get bitten, but seems to be spring or late autumn if I do.

In the event of being bitten, get a cotton bud and dab a little bit of toothpaste on the infected area; It always works. My sister was in her garden at the weekend and was complaining about being bitten by some sort of insects. She applied the paste and it worked. The soreness was greatly reduced and the swelling.

I have no idea why it works but it does!

My better half recommends Avon "Skin so soft", keeps the mozzies away and smells O.K. too.

we tend to avoid sitting outside until about an hour after the sprinklers have switched off. Combination of heat and dampness a firm attraction for the big midgies!! My wife also uses Avon product. Like the suggestion of toothpaste!!

This works for me, but is a pain when you need to pee.
