Going strong at 90 !!

What do you do to keep fit?
I pose this question..after witnessing and elderly '90 year old' black American on BBC TV early this morning. When I saw him dancing..I just could not believe his age..he was amazing!

His name..Frankie Manning(Think Ive got that right)..apparently he was called the king of swing in his heyday (dancing with Count Basie & Duke Ellington bands)
and..,they showed him danicng with his '70 yearold son'!!
He stated that dancing had kept him fit & healthy all his life..it wasnt just exercise but very enjoyable too.
I haven't danced for some years..but seeing this fit 'old'(

?..no never)guy has made me want to start up again!
I know Golf and tennis are probably the most popular keep fit routines for many in Algarve....but what do you do..that isnt just exercise(which can be very boring) but which is something you love and enjoy and keeps you fit and healthy?

Mine is gardening..walking....does playing piano count? and...so on..

A government announcement today says we should do 5 half hour exercises a week......and they included 'housework' (about b----y time too!)
so..come on fellas..roll up your sleeves and do your share....you know its good for you

Thanks for that Coop..glad I got name right!

He looks so well on it too....and tell you something else..looked like he still had all his own teeth!....perhaps 'swing' and 'lindy bop' etc..keeps ALL parts fit eh ?

Well Coop..I happen to know that you..like a dance too ..right?
great way to exercise ..wonder where they do it CVO?
Ill have to take refresher lessons!

always fancied belly dancing..good for hips and waist

Hi Ellie, you ask 'what do you do to keep fit' well I own horses and ride, and believe me mucking out stables every day during the long English winter, pushing a wheelbarrow around a field to 'pick up the poo' every day summer and winter as well as riding and grooming are hard work but good fun if that is your thing. It definately is mine, I couldn't imagine life without my horses, also have a Dalmatian called Basil that can walk 15 miles a day if you let him!!!!
That is why, when I can it is so good to get out to cvo to have a rest and relax for a while.

That sounds like hard work but also a lot of fun i imagine.and must keep you very fit...lookingafter animals is a fun way to keep healthy isnt it?
I had a boxer that kept me on the go..he was never tired..so much energy ..boy!
Will you ever do any riding in Algarve d'you think? I believe theres some good stables close to lagoa? id its somewhere opposite Intern. school?
didnt you know Lesley..I sent Cowboy a CVO sticker..to stick on his horse?

Well.. its bit of free advertising ..isnt it?

My sis..whos 11 years older than me..goes line dancing and aerobics twice a week..and is very fit..
think id rather do the dancing..but NOT in a line

Morning Ellie, Funny you should ask that, when my daughter and I were out last week we went for a ride, using the stables opposite the International School, Quinta da Gill, the owner was great, her name was Gill and she was Portugese, spoke perfect English, we rode all around the area where our house is, it was great to see it from a totally different perspective, and to get a feel for the tracks and walks in our area. Had a great time and would do it again, but probably not until the autumn now as I don't fancy riding in the heat and flies of the summer.
I would love to see Cowboy's horse with its sticker!! I own an ex-racehorse cant imagine him with a cvo sticker anywhere!?!

that sounded nice....your ride around the area you live. I should think that you do get a different aspect of surroudings from horse-back?
Its a sport/pasttime Ive never indulged in...can you learn to ride any age..or is that daft question?
Do you know of the charity in Algarve that helps the disabled with riding ponies?
Always thought that was a very worthwhile and full filling voluntary work..but I suppose youd have to have acertain knowledge of horse-handling for that? The nearest I get to a horse..is feeding them carrots and patting those in a nearby field

On the first day of creation, God created the Horse.

On the second day, God created Lesley Jean to serve the Horse.

On the third day, God created all the animals of the earth to spook the Horse when Lesley Jean was on his back.

On the fourth day, God created an honest day's work so that Lesley Jean could labor to pay for the keeping of the Horse.

On the fifth day, God created the grasses in the field so that Horse could eat and Lesley Jean could toil and clean up after the Horse.

On the sixth day, God created veterinary science to keep the Horse healthy and Lesley Jean broke.

On the seventh day, God rested and said "This is good. This will teach Lesley Jean humility. It will tire her out and keep her striving ever forward to meet the needs of the Horse."

Only change I would make is that it is my hubby who is working his but off to keep the horse and pay the bills!!! I just have all the fun riding and getting spooked by various things, not usually animals mostly large leaves that wave about in the wind and look so scarry that they must be the boogey man (well to my horse anyway!!) Hi Ellie, was about to reply to you but had to dash off. Firstly, hope the wedding went well, how was the weather? hope it wasn't to bad.
With ref. to horses, you can learn to ride at any age, just need to have a go. I love it but then have been on a horse since the age of 7, (many moons ago) The riding for disabled in England always welcomes anyone to help, you don't have to be very horsey as they also need people to walk alongside to support the children/adults. We have a centre very near here and I have helped many times.

Lesley Jean,
On an ex-race horse, the CVO sticker isn't placed on the Horse,
It's placed on the Rider....

On the Back of the Rider (if the horse is Fast)

On the Front of the Rider (if the horse is Slow)

(best buy two CVO stickers to cover all bets...after all, it is a Race Horse)

Because Texas horses are work horses, we tend to put the CVO stickers on Horse it's self...on what you could call the "Rear Bumper".

If you are are riding in Front of the Herd, the sticker says:

"I'm Going To CVO...Eat My Dust!".

If you are riding at the Back of the Herd, the sticker says:

"CVO My %&#%, I'm Going Back To Texas"

And if there is an SUV trying to pass you, I'ed recomend the stiicker that says:

"I May Be Slow...But I'm Ahead Of You!"

I'm sure there is a Moral to this Story, but it excapes me at the moment
( dust clouds the mind, don't ya know and I'm trying to pass some guy on a horse)
