Bureaucracy gone mad!

The Iceland store in Guia was closed yesterday because a member of the public complained that Eggs (not creme eggs - hen's eggs) did not have a label explaining the ingredients. They have closed to ensure all their labels comply with the legislation governing product labelling.

It was on the radio (Kiss FM) on the 10.30 news and discussed just before 11.00am

So, is it still closed?? We were going to call in there this afternoon.

On KISS FM . This is the station that has been known to play the previous days news tapes.

I am sure it will be the headline in this weeks " Rodent " as nothing else is as important in Portugal or the Algarve.

I must admit to being surprised if Overseas have fallen foul of the PT food regs, they have enough experience in Spain and should have done their homework.
A couple of years ago all the " UK " food stores were visited and closed until they labled their products according to regulations.

Called on 289 561564 and told they are closed today - hoping to be open tomorrow

I looked at the website, what a lame excuse, anyone with only a small knowledge of the rules in PT would know that the packkaging should have Portuguese translations.
Sounds like they have been caught having got away with it since their launch.
If the smaller shops have to adhere so should Overseas.

I am not shocked at all with this, knew it would only be a matter of time before it happened
Since it has opened I have noticed that the till receipts do not comply with Portuguese Vat laws, the Vat charged on items is not in line with the new regulations and they have items on the shelf past the sell by dates. I did not complain as it was no problem to me but it was obvious it was only time before someone did.
I would be surprised if they manage to get it open again. No doubt Apolonia will be cheering)

Read their web site dont believe what you hear on Kiss FM, i credited you with more sense.

Really? We used them when we were over in December and can't say I noticed the sell by dates being past!

We went over to Guia, and the staff say that everything is being re-labelled to correct what they describe as a malicious, nit-picking, technicality.

They say they needn't have been closed down, but that there is trade jealousy involved.

They hope to re-open Friday.

Given the almost uniquely British nature of certain " deep frozen Iceland " products and the remote chance that they would appeal to anyone else I have some sympathy with Overseas having to translate the ingredients etc in to Portuguese.
