I know that there is a basic gym at the tennis club but are there any gym / spa's facilities within say a 5 km radius?

There is a gym in Lagoa in the middle of the little industrial estate, near Top Shower and Ma Maison.

It is actually OK. 2-3 running machines a couple of static bikes, a good selection of free weights and pec decs. Not air conditioned. If you want the whole gym / pool / steam room / sauna, this does not measure up but I have used it many times and is OK . When we move out there we would like to join somewhere with the aforementioned facilities hence the post....

The gym at Lagoa has free weights, cradio and weight machines, not a bodybuilders paradise, but enough to circulate the blood!

There's a gym, indoor pool, sauna and jacuzzi at Vale d'Oliveiras resort, I believe a day pass is €10 or so but I don't know about ongoing membership

It's the 5-star resort just before you reach Pestana (coming from Sesmarias direction). It's recently opened after standing empty for a couple of years and it looks rather nice at the moment. Personally I use the gym in Lagoa that Matryx mentioned, it's quite small and not much of a selection of weights, but it's air-conditioned and has 3 treadmills, a couple of cross-trainers and two bikes for cardio if that's any help!

That's it jonboy :) Also forgot to mention the Lagoa gym has classes too, body pump, yoga and spinning are all popular (I haven't tried it myself, but the spinning class looks like a killer!)
