Ali co-op failure

The Resident reports that the remaining 16 Algarve Food Co-operative stores are to close down. Am I right in assuming this refers to the 'Ali Super' chain?
What a pity if this is so. I've always found them ideal for buying everyday items and there always seemed to be one nearby wherever you were around the Algarve.
I suppose it's a sign of the times with Portugal now being detected on the financial radar as the next potential victim of the European financial troubles.

I don't think so. I am sure there are more than 16 of those stores. Silves used to have a Co-op, and I think you could only buy there if you were a member. Don't know if it is still there, but think it may be referring to them.

yes the ali super chain is now finished, also closed is the fabrica inglese in silves (for the moment) which was owned by them
I know one supplier owed 8000 euros by alisuper, which looks like will never be paid.
one alisuper store in messines has now reappeared as a "spar" shop

Does anyone know if the former alisuper shop in Monte Carvoeiro has a new supermarket tenant?

I suspected it involved AliSuper because I have noticed many of them closing down on my last three or four visits and I wondered if they were in trouble - now we know.
The Resident reports that they have debts of 18 million euros - frightening!
Makes the supplier Martin knows seem small fry at 8000 euros, but of course, to him, losing 8000 euros is serious money.

Well, I stand corrected. I often used the one in Monte Carvoeiro, so will miss it.

I've been meaning to post about this too..... does anyone know if the Ali store, next to La Palmeria restaurant, (up past the market) is still open as something else? They did the best fresh croissants & donuts. We would drive there from QDP nearly every morning for a fresh supply for breakfast.

I think it is still there and anyone can go in and shop.
