After last years fire with the loss of thousands of trees, our beloved Silves parks department have now seen fit to chop down what is or more correctly was the only redeeming feature of Messines, a line of 40 year old trees on the road into the town.
This has been done...wait for it....so that they can build a garden!
Needless to say the people in Messines are very very angry indeed.

Im not surprised they are angry Martin
We drove through Messines in September and I recall those trees very well;it makes me so sad
As you say..as if its not bad enough losing thousands of trees through the fires..but then to deliberately cut down mature trees seems not only a folly but a sin!
I sincerely hope those locals of Messines make their voices heard in loud disapproval!
But will it make any difference?
Usually not!

too late all gone - they have now stuck in some new palms...but they do not have the attraction in my view as normal trees...palms dont give shade and remind me too much of the desert.
yes in a day with a chain saw 40 years of growth can be destroyed..what a disgrace.
