I believe its a type of cricket - they usually live in the ground under trees and come out to breed in Sept - they climb up the tree trunk and make a hell of a noise whilst doing it.

ok, i'm the guy who winched this beast from the pool!
after it realised that i was not a serious threat and that i had no nutritional value..., it tossed be to one side, then scuttled away into the undergrowth...
i am sure that i encountered the "caramujera sheep sucker"!!!
a mamalian yet insectile lifeform that preys on the weak of the flock in darkness whilst they rest, leaving an unidentifyable imaciated husk...
be vigilant if you live in the country.
keep your sheep in doors.

Evidently in certain contries - mexico is one where cicadas are as prolific as ants, and also china where they are nearly as common as people - they do eat them! - grilled on skewers. o the next time you see what looks like a prawn kebab........ :D
