Have the use of a villa for a few weeks in september if we want it - only problem is our extremely active (and disobedient) 3 year old will probably makes our lives a misery with the unguarded pool. Am wondering if there is a company out there that specialises in temporary pool gates or similar? I don`t want to just throw some armbands on him for the day

try googling swimming pool safety turtles - it is a sort of 'watch' affair that you lock onto your child's wrist and then you simply plug in a receiver somewhere in the villa - if the child's arm gets submersed you will definately know about it! - we used them both in the UK and here when our children were young. Not as good as a fence but at least you know immediately if the little cherub falls in!

You could just throw lots of salt in the pool, then he won't sink.

I am not sure that a pool fence is going to be a good solution for only a few weeks in terms of price, a 5x9m standard pool needs at least 35 meters of fence which also need to be fixed somewhere, so he does not go in with the whole fence. In most cases that means making holes in the terrace to accomodate a number of support poles.

The sonar warning systems are good if you are in the vicinity, but if you want to stop the child falling in, a safety net will probably be the way to go. the "Katchakid" nets are sold by suppliers in the Algarve and are apparently easy to fit. Can't say what these would cost, so you may have to google a bit for the best offer.

We had similar concerns when friends stayed with us last year.

Apart from being as observant as we could, whenever the pool was NOT in use we put the cover in place and secured the loose end so that there was some support should a small person fall or otherwise into the pool.

Not foolproof but a little added secuirity

Here's a radical suggestion, teach the child to be obedient. It'll save a fortune on safety features throughout his childhood and make your life so much easier.
