We are Carvoeiro virgins and are coming out last week of May. We have been asked ( as per usual ) to bring home a bottle of whiskey. Could any seasoned pros tell me where it is best to get it and how much please?

Do I take it nobody drinks whiskey on here then ?

From observation I do not think that the prices in euros for most spirits now offer any significant saving over the UK.
It may have been different 12 months ago when your £ bought you 20% euros.

I think I take the view that if you can afford to drink whiskey in the UK, you can afford it in Carvoeiro....so why worry.

As far as my tipple is concerned, wine, it is still cheaper in europe than it is here. Not as much as it was....but still cheaper.

Where in the Uk can you ( legally ) still buy drinkable wine for £1.50 bottle and if you want to try it 90p/bottle .

You still can in the big supermarkets in Portugal. look for the offers, 6 x casal garcia or similar for under 3 euros/bottle ( £2.75 ).
Avoid Intermarche with its overpriced ( UK supermarket ) wines.

Most spirits are still cheaper in Portuguese supermarkets, than in the UK. But I think the question related to bringing a bottle back to the UK, which means you are stuck with buying at the airport. Have not found any bargains here. Out of interest, I did read recently that new x-ray machines which can differentiate between OK and problem liquids, are now available. Difficulty is they cost £100,000 each, so uptake is liable to be slow.

If your friends are not concerned about which brand they have, Soares often have cheap whisky with interesting names (there is one on the square facing the beach).
You can take full size bottles in hold luggage so no need to buy at the airport which isn't particularly cheap - when travelling from Faro to the UK I usually take a couple of litre bottles of Macieira brandy carefully positioned and protected by clothing and well wrapped in plastic bags - so far with no breakages.
If flying with Ruinair don't go over their 15 Kilo limit as the excess baggage costs will negate any savings made on the booze.

Tend to forget about hold baggage, since we rarely use it. Before the restrictions, though, we would always take alcohol as cabin baggage. My brother-in-law and wife were not as lucky as you bica. On a recent visit they thought they had packed a bottle of red wine carefully, and hep, it was smashed by the handlers, and all their clothers were soaked in red wine.

A good way of protecting bottles in your hold baggage is to place them in an empty plastic water bottle. Just cut the top off and slide your chosen tipple inside and then wrap up in clothes etc. I am reliably informed that this will prevent them from being smashed

A decent whiskey like Grouse we found was no cheaper in Portugal than in the UK, even port seems similar in price, all to do with the Euro being so
strong against the pound I am told.

Just to point out, the spelling for Scotch, Canadian, and Japanese is whisky (plural: whiskies), but Irish and American is whiskey (whiskeys).
