Just what is the score on this ? I have a mobile with a monthly tarrif with 02 UK. I have used this to text in Singapore and Australia yet my ability to text in CVO is zero. When I questioned my provider after a previous visit I was met with the glib reply " Oh ! it must be that the in country system does not provide support " ????. I found myself in conversation in a CVO bar this last week with a fellow traveller, we had several things in common, 1, we both have identical Nokia handsets, 2, we are both with 02,
3, we were both "tuned in " to TMN as Pt provider. This is where we vary, he was happily exchanging texts with UK, I could not. Before my argument with O2 resumes can any one offer any advice or guidance ? What am I doing wrong ?

I am with O2 and use a nokia handset, no probs with O2, also used mine in Singapore and Malyasia. When we arrived in Portugal my frequency went to Portugal - I would speak to customer services.

I'm also with o2 have a nokia n95 and it just changes automaticly to TMN, no probs with txts or calls.

I'm with T-Mobile, which defaults to TMN in Portugal. My wife is with Vodaphone. Neither of us has any problem texting from Portugal.

Update :- I contacted 02 today and the advice was as follows:
"As you are back in the country sir it is not possible to determine the fault that may have occurred. I have checked with the tech section and you are tri-band connected so all appears in order. When next you travel, if you have a problem please contact our international helpline number on +448705 214000." Not sure that this tells me much, will not be able to test the system until next year. What is a tri-band any way ? I was able to make phone calls to UK and Portugal and was forced to use a call to Australia instead of the convenience of a text [cost implication also], TMN came up on auto selection and I was also able to take incoming text from a Portuguese mobile. There does not seem to be a straight answer, obviously others have experienced problems and several have not .. Hey Ho !!

I think you can ignore the tri-band advice. I have recently used my wife's dual band O2 mobile to text from the Algarve with no problem.
Also before I bought a tri-band model I used to text ok with my previous dual band Nokia.
My present Nokia is a tri-band and is on Orange - it texts with no problem from all over the Algarve via TNM.
Tri-band is essential for such as the USA who have a different network frequency than the two in Europe (trust them!), but not necessary in Europe (unless there's been a change of frequency in Portugal - which I doubt).
