Are there any visitors to the Algarve who travel there frequently by car & ferry? I want to know the most economic routes and when to travel to secure the cheapest deal? Any advice welcome.

From Midlands, South-west and Wales we reckon Poole/Portsmouth to St. Malo is the cheapest and Plymouth to Santander is the easiest (notwithstanding possible sea conditions in the Bay of Biscay  )

Mind you.....you will need a 2nd mortgage for the ferry fares!

Don't you ever use the Channel tunnel Widge? :)

Used it once to go to Paris. As i live in Bristol it's a long way east only to drive south & west but if it were more economical overall then i'd go for it.

We did the ferry to Santander in October 2006 on the Pont Avon.

Massive ship, but oh my god. Spent the whole trip, all 30 hours off it lying down due to the awful sea. I know that it only takes 18, but ours did'nt.

It may be great in the middle of the summer but you would have to be brave to do it at any other time
