Fenced off area

When we were there at Christmas we went for a long drive to Foia and then went back to the village by going northish and via Silves. We approached Silves from the north on the road from Sapeira. By doing so we passed, on the left hand side, approx. 15K from Silves, a large fenced off area. It went on for miles (or Ks, if you prefer) and I have no idea why.
Can anyone tell me why such a vast area is fenced off?

Hi, That would be the Centro Cinegético - mini-zoo,( animal farm,reserve).
Unfortunately it suffered quite badly with the fires some time ago.

How long has it been a mini zoo? And just how 'mini' is it? It's a vast area!

We know there is a mini zoo around this area and that it has been there for years, but the fenced off part is new and is huge...

Well, it wasn't fenced off last Christmas! It is a VAST area and surely has nothing to do with the mini zoo???
