I've just come back to work from a weeks holiday in Carvoeiro to be told that half of us are likely to be made redundant as from next Friday

How easy is it to find bar work/somewhere to live over there. I realise that the wages aren't great but as I have nothing to lose I'm thinking that might take the plunge!

Any help (whether for or against) would be greatly received and listened to.

Hiya, you will need to be able to speak Portuguese to have a chance of getting a job in a bar, or for that matter anywhere. You will probably find any jobs or accommodation in the local papers, try The Resident, Google it and have a look at the adverts.

FAQ - Resident

In the large resorts that have lots of bars aimed at the English/Irish/Scottish there are many bars that have staff that don't speak Portuguese. I even know of restaurants owned and run for several years by people that don't speak Portuguese so don't be put off by that.

For bar work the best bet is to turn up and treck from bar to bar asking - it's the right time of year so you should find something. If not in CVO try Praia da Rocha and Alvor. Have you thought of phoning the bars that you mentioned in your previous posting? If they don't have anything they may know someone that has.

As for accommodation the challenge is finding residential as opposed to holiday lettings. Word of mouth locally is often best so you possibly need to take a holiday let for a week while you try to find something cheaper. Do you know of anyone that will let you crash out on their floor for a few days? Holiday reps often know of places to rent and jobs going so you could try asking any you know.

Don't forget that at the end of the season you are likely to be jobless again.
