Hi Robin,
Definitely recommend Graham's suggestion re the tennis club. They are all very friendly there and Ronald (the guy in charge) or Graham (one of the coaches) are happy to help organise similar standard people for children (not allowed to call a 16 year old a child tho' am I !)/students/adults to have a game with. Or they will arrange coaching sessions either singly or in groups which would be a good way to find someone else to hang out with. e-mail Ronald on ccdtenis@mail.telepac.pt or phone 282 357 847 to explain the situation and I'm sure they'll come up with something. Our son, (now 19) has usually had a friend with him so this has not been a problem. You could also try the Vale de Milho golf club to see if they have anything in a similar vein - they also do coaching sessions for juniors.
Best of luck !
