We have recently bought a good second hand car from what we consider to be a reliable dealer. My husband is a motor engineer though and knows what he's looking at. It may help to take someone along with you to have a look at any car you might be interested in if you aren't too sure. Please pm me if you want any more info (on where we got ours from etc.)

Where are the most reliable and best value locations for second-hand cars?
I'd say that an answer to the original question largly depends on the amount of money you're willing to spend - and while I can't comment on this topic for more expensive nearly-new vehicles, I'm happy to share my experience with cheaper used cars in the Algarve :
I have always bought privately, often after scouring papers like the 123. If (like me!) you are not mechanically minded, I would agree with Sea Breeze and recommend that you pay a mechanic a few €uros to tag along and cast a watchful eye. Mechanics are also good people to ask about second-hand cars as they obviously see quite a few during their working day and could put you in touch with private sellers or reputable dealers. PM me if you would like the number of the English Mechanic I normally use.
And, there is also a Portuguese equivalent of the 'Parkers Guide' which is useful reference material, as prices in Portugal are often different to what can be expected in other EU countries.
Sorry I can't give you a location of where to buy, but if you're looking at the 'cheaper' end of the Portuguese second-hand car market (if there is such a thing!) then I hope this all helps...!
