Walk 27 January 2020 : Montes de Cima. CLOSED
Walk 27 January 2020 : Montes de Cima. CLOSED
Walk is now closed.
Please note change of start and route : all walkers should have had an email.
The Montes de Cima walk is about 2.5 hours and includes one quite steep hill and a few other ups & downs.
For caffeine addicts, there isn't a cafe at the start of the walk, but there are 2 cafes on the approach road ( see below).... Cafe A Taberna Nicola on the right , or cafe Andre on the left.....I expect to be at cafe Nicola about 0920, which is about 15 minutes from the start.
Start : 1000
Degree of difficulty ( scale 1:5) : 3, Energetic.
Lunch:this is optional, but we will be going back to O Tasco , an old favourite, but where we haven't been for some time. The standard Prata de Dia there is 9.5€ but only includes a limited choice of main dish ( turkey strogonoff or pork medallions in pepper sauce) . With tip & charity contribution, expect to pay about 12€ pp.
Directions: From Lagoa, turn left on the N125 and go past the turn-off for Alvor. After a few hundred yards, there is a BP station on your right and a road signposted " Senhora do Verde, Vidigal, Casais, Alcalar, Torre" : turn right here. IF you go past the Hotal Penina on your left, you have gone too far
Go up this road ( M532). After going through a single lane tunnel and after about another 1/4 mile, make sure you follow the road bending left signed Alcalar ; do NOT go straight on.
You should then soon be crossing the motorway. Carry on, passing A Taberna Nicola cafe on your right, and Cafe Andre a bit later on your left. Carry on past O Tasco, on the left. Just past O Tasco, bear left and follow the Monchique sign. About 5 minutes after O Tasco, you will see a building on the right that used to be a cafe bear left here ( signposted Montes de Cima, Marmalete, Casais ) and drive on for about 3kms till you get to Montes de Cima. Follow the road round to the right to the cafe Taberna da Manel ; park opposite, or a bit further up the road. Please do not park just outside the cafe.
NB....Unfortunately, the Honey Cafe is closed on Mondays, so you need to have a coffee at Cafe Nicola or Andre...see above..if required).
Map reference : 37.241448, -8.611435
Usual caveats: all walks are at your own risk, and we do not walk if it is pouring with rain.....I will endeavour to put any cancellation note on this site by 0800 on the day of the walk.
Walking boots/stout trainers , walking pole(s), hats and water recommended. No charge, of course.
Please also advise if you change your mind about coming, as there may be a waiting list.
Any questions , please ask below or PM me or ring 282 380015 preferably between 1800-1900.
Numbers will be limited, so it is essential to respond below if you want to come. Please also state whether you will want lunch .
If there are too many, David will be organising a walk, probably the next day.

Re: Walk 27 January 2020 : Montes de Cima. CLOSED
Just to say that when booking the O Tasco on Saturday, the prata de dia menu has changed a bit to give a choice of turkey strogonoff or pork medallions in a pepper sauce. With wine/pudding/coffee that's 9.5€ pp , so we'll say 12 € pp to include tip and charity contribution.
We usually stop at Cafe Andre en route for a coffee, though it is a bit "basic" albeit in the sun : for a change we'll try Cafe Nicola ( on right) in case anyone wants to join us there at about 0920/0930.
A reminder that walk now starts at Honey Cafe , but unfortunately that's shut on Mondays.

Only 6 of us for coffee, but 22 for walk with 18 lunchers...plus Alfie.
All went well till Carol took a tumble over a metal spike sticking up on the track...marked here with tape to help future walkers:
Some motor bikes were using the autodrome and making a fearsome racket:
Half way round we had our own bike hazard; A lot of ground clearance had been done...
I forgot to take a group photo.....but back in 2h 45m which included Carol's recovery time : Willie escorted her back to O Tasco where we met up... and had an enjoyable meal:
and made 25€ for charity. Many thanks.
