Beware N125 east of Guia

Post by Bruce Wallis »

It took me the best part of 2 hours to get home to Carvoeiro from Faro airporton the N125 2 days ago due to the incredible level and frequency of road works between Almancil and Guia.
There are about 4 new roundabouts being put in, as well as general road repairs and modifications. I think I counted about 10 sets of lights.
Because of the density of the traffic, some traffic queues stretch from roadworks to roadworks.
There is some stupid driving as well. On 2 occasions we were stopped behind other cars, when idiot frustrated drivers from maybe 3 or 4 behind us, cut out, overtook the traffic queue and crossed over the lights on red, gambling on the opposite end lights not changing.
In some places the GNR are controlling the traffic flow.
I dont know how long these works, especially around fonte de Boliquimme will last, but it doesnt bode well for the summer!

I am sure this is a silly question, but for a trip from Faro to CVO, why didn't you use the A22 ?
It's always empty, takes a predictable 45 minutes and costs less than a caneca.

Does anyone know what is happening to the roundabout in Lagoa? We were there for five weeks and we did not see any work going on during that time. Has the contractor gone bust as all the machinery was just sitting beside the road.

They are doing major road works on the 125, which should have started many years ago.
Yes there will be delays, probably for the next year.
Suggest common sense dictates that one uses the Motorway. Simples.
I am amazed that there was not one post on here about the Dartford crossing being closed for a week!

You're a bigger clown than I first imagined - what person in their right mind would want to use that road

Arrived last night. €20 to YOR to use the A22. RB 40 minutes later. Why would I want my wife (and hire car!) on one of the most dangerous roads in Europe to save about three beers.

During the day the 125 is much
More interesting to drive on than the motorway, which has its own share of idiot drivers

I normally have hire car and use the N 125 when getting from airport to Albufeira. Last time May last year. Always declined the transponder. My flight arrives 22:30. Will the N125 be fairly quiet that time of night. If I decide to use the 22. How is the toll paid. Have in the past given €20 to hire company refunded on return of car. TIA

Must be an expensive caneca......anyway, as pointed out, a single use of the A22 in a hire car usually means forfeiting the 20€ deposit for the transponder. But, in any case, I agree with Bruce : motorway driving is a painful bore, whichever country you are in, and the N125 enables you to begin to feel you are back in Portugal.

And if it ( usually ) takes 10-15mins longer, so what?

Must say, the current roadworks are a pain , but look forward to a much better quality road in future.

Just back from CVO. Used Hoppa this time on the journey over the driver left the 125 before Boliqueime and called to Albufeira using the M526, when he left Albufeira he stuck to back roads ( not Gale or Armacao ) before rejoining the 125. The return journey was more interesting though. I was the 2nd last pickup before heading for the airport. Next stop was was Silves, at he hotel Colina dis Mouros and then he continued on that road to Algoz and on to Ferreiras, from he rejoined the 125 (at that big junction)until Beliqueime and at the big new roundabout left the 125 for the 270 and after a few Kms we joined the motorway until we came to a sign for Vilamoura/Quarteira where he left the motorway and he rejoined the 125 (at that big roundabout with the flyover). Straight to the airport after that. It was a very interesting route, roads were very good and quite scenic, lots of orange groves, traffic was light, he avoided the tolls by only using the motorway for one short sharp stint. I was picked up at approx 9.40 am when I looked at the airport clock in departures it was 10.45.

The reception for Hoppa and other transfer companies was in P2 because of airport upgrades and just to be aware there is not a lot of shelter/cover in that car park. The promo code I used for Hoppa was SUMMER25 which reduced the transfer to €16 return.

Yesterday, a friend on Facebook was saying that the N125 roadworks have now been postponed until the end of summer due to the havoc they have been causing. Does anyone know if this is a fact?

We are due out on Saturday and pick our YOR Car vehicle up around 12 noon. If the roadworks are still in place I will take the A22 as I always make use of the €15 allowance for toll fees. However, like one or two others I do actually prefer the N125, and will use it if possible.

Incidentally, does anyone know if the YOR Car vehicles are still in P4 during airport modifications? (one for Steen perhaps).
