Plane flying around over Carvoeiro - portimao
Plane flying around over Carvoeiro - portimao
Any one any idea what this plane that has been flying around over Carvoeiro and portimao for the past two days is doing.
The droning noise is an absolute nuisance

roy4eyes with a new plane?
Re: Plane flying around over Carvoeiro - portimao
I'm retired from flying so you will have to blame the hundreds of parachutists jumping out of 3 droning turboprops from Portimao aerodrome

I think that Roy is correct.
The twin engined planes take of, and climb in wide circles up to about 10,000 feet or what ever, unload their skydivers, then return the same way to Alvor airstrip to reload with skydivers as the 2nd plane goes through the same routine.
Its actually quite entertaining to stand on Alvor boardwalk and seeing if you can spot the falling skydivers before their 'chutes open.

Being pedantic as usual !! - there are 3 planes this year climbing to 14,000 ft. just below the base of the airway at 15,000 ft.
If you look on http://www.flightradar24.com it is interesting to see the patterns their flight paths make !!

We have a similar thing here in Lincoln some days, today being one. Constant distant droning which can become irritating. Showing up on Flightradar as a C130J Hercules. This is usually at 17 to 19,000 feet with speeds varying between 150 and 220 knots. The flight pattern shows as a multitude of circles around Lincoln. Have not a clue what it could be doing. Anyone got any ideas?
Re: Plane flying around over Carvoeiro - portimao
Went outside a few minutes ago and saw him flying over us now much lower. Had another look at Flightradar and he tracked South toward Sleaford in a steady descent, then doubled back North and turned at Market Rasen to land at RAF Scampton. Amazing slow landing speed of 87 knots if Flightradar is correct. And obviously military, so I would assume some sort of training.
Re: Plane flying around over Carvoeiro - portimao
It seems to be operating out of RAF Scampton and could be paradropping or, more likely by the length of time at 19,000 ft., doing reconnaissance and planning/filming for the remake of the film 'Dambusters'.

It's been going on for months now but only one or two days a week; some weeks not at all and in 10/10 cloud cover. If for a film remake they must have blown the budget by now in man hours and fuel

Indeed, why can't they head out over sea and drop the sky divers in the drink?fozzies wrote:Any one any idea what this plane that has been flying around over Carvoeiro and portimao for the past two days is doing.

When the Hercs use to operate out of Lyneham, you could never travel on the M4 without seeing them do low level take-offs & landings...it's a quiet stretch now!
