Buying furniture home or Algarve

We recently helped clients out by opening up their apartment for deliveries.

The bought almost everyting from Ikea ( lisbon ) ordered from their website ( they are in Sweden ).
Ikea gave a delivery time and we were there to accept it .
The delivery men had to carry a heavy sofa up 4 flights of stairs.

Do not know how Ikea PT prices compare to Ikea UK but would have thought it competative if you have to add your UK shipping costs.

Thanks for that. have you any idea how much the transport was from Lisbon, although I understand Seville is closer. we are waiting to find out how much AR would charge. The other thing is if there is anything missing the trek back to Lisbon or Seville would be a pain, whereas our local IKEA is about 7 miles away. The end of the day it will however be done to cost as opposed to convience.

Licy, What we do know is that they found the Ikea web site easy to navigate and that their contacts spoke english ( as did the delivery men ).

If Ikea deliver and there is something missing I wouldn't expect you to trek anywhere - it's their problem to deliver whatever is missing (assuming you ordered it).

Lets assume you order from DFS, they deliver to your UK shipper,. Would you be there to unpack it inspect it to make sure that all is OK and then repack it.
It is then shipped to the Algarve. You unpack and find damage.

Unless you have checked it yourself at every stage then you will be left with a " he said /she said arguement between you, DFS and your shipper.
Any consumer proptection you have in the UK will also probably be invalid .
Would DFS or almost any UK supplier be interested in a problem you discovered in Portugal !!

Cost Vs Convenience ???

In both cases costs and convenience come out top. DFS will not deliver to AR. I want to get the delivery in, check it then with the knowledge it is perfect, get AR's to collect. the same goes for any other delivery. I agree it would be a major problem trying to sort it in Portugal..

I do know about the curtain shop by the petrol station. Unfortunately, I called there some time last year and there was a note saying back in 5 minutes, but no-one appeared and so I gave up. The next time I went the door was open so I went in but no-one around - trying calling out and waited around for a while, but again no-one around and I gave up. so, I got my curtains reheaded at the shop under the PO instead. I am considering both suppliers as a back up plan, but will probably do as I have done in the past and buy ready made in the Uk and take/send them out.

When I'm paying £80 for full length and same width Iined curtains I don't think that is too bad. Having said that I still have 2 sets for the sitting room so who knows. All the plaster/rendering is done now, so I guess in the strange European way to build it will be tiles and bathrooms going in and at that point they may even think about outside doors and windows. i think they are working this month. Finish early October. kithen to go in mid October. WHoppee!

The transport could be £170 for 2 cubic meters from the Uk. Tax is added on the IKEA base price, or so it would seem. I still have no idea how much the transport would cost from Lisbon or Seville, but surely it would be down to me if my delivery driver took a package from IKEA and there was something damaged. I know in the past people talk about having to take packs back themselves to rectify that sort of problem. It should be down to IKEA but not sure they would pay to transport something. maybe a screw or two. I need the wardrobe to be there when we arrive so it be installed on day 1/2 of our holiday, so that worries me as we could find the wardrobe cannot be put together. I may be making more out of this than I need to though so open to experience of IKEA.

I now have my beds etc. Indeed I have tried to compare before buying in blighty, but on the whole CVO does not win, especially with electrical things. Naturally there are certain things I will buy and have bought, such as big kitchen appliances even though they are so much more expensive. Crosby no idea what you think I paid too much for, but if I did I wont shoot myself.
