Mosquitoes

Post by Reggie »

I'm visiting Carvoeiro in July/ August and was wondering whether there is a problem with mosquitoes in the town. Please can anyone advise?
Thanks in advance.

would always advise as a precaution especially if you are prone to bites. My daughter has just returned from CVO and found the aftersun with insect repellant very effective.

I've been chewed by mosquitos in pretty much every continent. But never been bitten once in Cvo by mossies (although was attacked by ants and bitten outside Casa do Bife ...)

Anyway - I always shut the doors and windows well before dusk of the apartment which I always thinks helps - but have sat outside in the bar and not had a single bits over the past 7 years.

I don't even recall seeing people with the bites wandering round the village that I used to see when I was in other warm countries - I think Cvo does not have a massive mozzie problem

I've had a few bites over the 20 years I've visited CVO. On the first occasion my foot swelled up for about 3 days. Since then, I've always taken vitamin B tablets for 2 weeks before arriving. I've also used the usual insect-repelling plugs + the sun tan lotions with repellant added. I still get the occasional bite but not the adverse reaction I got the first time.

I was bitten over Easter. We have screens in all the rooms and put smelly repellant stuff on wrists and ankles as the sun goes down. The worst is when you can hear the little bugger in the bedroom and next thing, it's in your ear! I use the word bugger freely because Fiona Bruce said it twice on a 7pm BBC1 programme tonight. She was referring to a frenchman though.

we use the plug ins from dusk to dawn - no problems with 'buggers' in the night

Based on someting I'd read on the net I took a good quality Vitamin B compound for three weeks before going to Croatia last year. My three companions were bitten to bu**ery but I wasn't touched. Might be coincidence but a lot of people swear by this approach (Marmite I think is regarded as a secret weapon here because of the high Vitamin B content).

Well I was told that eating Marmite and rubbing Avon skin so soft on myself was the way to go, and I did it and it seemed to work, however my other half has just been on a study day for holiday imms and was told that its all a load of crap! the only thing that will stop a mozzie from biting is Deet, developed by the USA when they were fighting in Vietnam. She went on to say that they like the beer drinkers!

So that's why my husband never gets bitten! :D
I agree with CM deet is the best deterrent, we also use the plugs ins which seem quite effective.

Always found this works a treat - without it I'll be drained of blood in a day!

I've also got one of those high-pitched sound devices - drives me mad, never mind the mozzies :D

May I respectfully suggest you all move to the top of Restaurant Hill where we don't seem to suffer from the same mozzie problem that the rest of you seem to be experiencing!
