Walk Thursday 7 May 2015 : Barragem do Arade
Walk Thursday 7 May 2015 : Barragem do Arade
An Election Day walk!
A relatively new walk for CVO Ramblers.....whilst it has been done in just over 2 and a half hours, the last couple of times have been 3 hours 5 mins! Along the side of the Barragem , up quite a long and step hill ( but plenty of opportunities to stop & admire the views ), down to the valley bottom and back along a flat path. There is a stream to cross but there were plenty of stepping stones when we did the recce.
Degree of Difficulty ( scale 1:5 ) : 3 Energetic
Start:10.00 am
Directions : drive from Carvoeiro to Silves, go over the bridge and turn right and follow the N124 for about 7 kms until you see a turning on the left signposted "Barragem do Arade 3 kms".......the signpost is in a small triangular traffic island, which has a large palm tree on it.
Drive in the direction of the Barragem for 1km where there is a cafe ( A Rainha) on the left: carry on another km or so and park opposite the cafe " O Ze"......please note, this is a white building on the left , but the last time we were there , the sign had been taken down for refurbishment and might not have been put back by then ....but this is what it should look like;
https://www.google.pt/maps/@37.233532,- ... !2e0?hl=en
Usual caveats: all walks are at your own risk, and we do not walk if it is pouring with rain.....I will endevour to put any cancellation note on this site by 0830 on the day of the walk.
Walking boots/stout trainers , walking pole(s), hats and water recommended. No charge, of course.
Please note that the cafe A Rainha will probably be closed at the start of the walk but cafe O Ze should be open , though it seems to be the only cafe in the Algarve that doesn't have any milk, so we will try & remember to bring some if people want a coffee with milk!
Please indicate below if you can come. Last winter we had to curtail numbers to 20.

Another beautiful day , but we missed Bruce, Julia and their friends, making 15 of us.
The first problem was that the "Cafe with no name" was also shut , so no pre-walk coffee, so whether it actually had any milk or not we will never know!
The initial water hazard has been bridged over, much to Zillah's delight, and the Barragem looked magnificent, reflecting the blue sky.
Left to right : Steve, Wendy, Lisa, Sharon, Colin, Sue, Ken, Zillah, Rob, Eileen, Sue, Nick, Pam and Nick...photo by Geoff
and the rather tiring climb to the top was rewarded with some great views...once your leader had made a false start down the valley!
unfortunately, the evidence of the cable smelters was all too obvious still:
It seemed a long way back to the cafe and opinions varied on whether it might be open, but fortunately it was! The lead group made it in 3h 5m, but some stragglers took about 15 mins more! Anyway, a lovely cold drink awaited in a cool bar!...and no one lost!

Sorry we missed this one Geoff, but we had the family here, we'll miss next Thursday as well, as we are flying home at the end of a 3 1/2 month stay.
