February a very quiet month ?
February a very quiet month ?
In the first 3 weeks of February only one restaurant gets a review! No wonder restaurants & bars are closing nobody's dining out.............or if they are they're not telling us about it?
Re: February a very quiet month ?
It does seem to be very quiet with one exception, we have never seen so many campervans, Silves looks like the car park at Glastonbury festival. The cold wet weather in the north and the " tolerant " atitute to them in the Algarve must be the attraction.
The problem is that they do not spend very much money apart from basics in the local shops.

Re: February a very quiet month ?
I was out last week for a few days ( at €70 return why not?)and we dined in Happys (excellent as usual) and Jotta Lita ( excellent) lunched in Cafe Fino and Taste (equally excellent) got the full spiel in both Taste and Jota Lita about tax 'spies' checking who was not issuing receipts etc etc. The owner of Taste said restaurants were 'promised' in December that IVA in restaurants would be reduced to 13% shortly but so far... da nada.widge wrote:In the first 3 weeks of February only one restaurant gets a review! Bars: a lot seemed to be closed, Bradys, Roundup, Jailhouse, Black Stove. Hemingways and Harrys were open.
so ...... 4 mini (very) reviews

Re: February a very quiet month ?
January and February have been a disaster for the local restaurants.
Even the ones that usually fare well in the winter, places like Happys and A'Gale have been very quiet. Sometimes less than 10 covers a night, and that is terrible for those 2 popular restaurants who would normally, this time of the year, have 20+ covers a night.
The problem gets worse, because people like us, the longer term residents, don't want to sit in an empty restaurant, so opt to eat at home.
We only go out to eat now, when we have friends coming out for weekends etc, or to a special event night, like Valentines at Vila Nova.
Funnily enough, one place that does seem to have done well, is A Tasquina, in Lagoa. This on the back of the fact that some forum members discovered it, and the word has gone out via this forum, and both times we have been in the last month, it has been fairly full.
Its popular near neighbour, Chrissy's, has been very quiet when we have passed it though.

While waiting for the post office to open ( to pay tolls ) we decided to have a snack and enjoy the warm sunny weather. We noticed that most of the restaurants with outside tables around the square were full.
Further up the hill, Marisquera, Rede and Vimar were all busy , tourists and locals taking advantage of the lunchtime specials

It is true, yesterday the village seemed to wake up from the winter. Even after 4pm there seemed to be more people out and about enjoying the late afternoon sun.EMM wrote:While waiting for the post office to open ( to pay tolls ) we decided to have a snack and enjoy the warm sunny weather. Yes - the sun is for free! At night, everything empty! Nobody seems to be willing to spend money!

Mobile homes and the freeloading atitude of this community is causing increasing concern among residents who are facing higher taxes, rates etc. If you came here at this time of year and saw the numbers and where they park for FREE and how little they contribute maybe you would think differently.
It would appear that only the supermarkets benefit .
