Grande Cafe o Cais, Silves

Post by roy4eyes »

Looking for the unusual ? - here you have found it !

Street level is a bar (similar in style to 'Jailhouse') with Fado, Live music, Karaoke or Jam sessions.

Up a narrow staircase is the restaurant playing, by contrast, classical music with a limited menu of steak, chicken and seafood.

The proprietors are a mature couple, an American lady from Seattle and her partner from Doncaster with a charming young Dutch waitress.

We all had the 'special offer Teriyaki steak at € 9.99' accompanied by small jacket potatoes and salad which we all agreed was probably the best we had come across - accompanied by the organic house wine which, although not cheap at € 14, was excellent.
The only downside was the desserts, which although very nice, were over-priced at € 5.50.

Afterwards we went downstairs for coffee and drinks and to listen to Iona singing.

The proprietor in chatting to us also mentioned that for anyone taking dinner there they would provide free transport to/from Carvoeiro to avoid the drink and drive problem. To take advantage you phone 919 743 289/965 800 128.

We have been there for one of their Fado nights. It starts in the first floor restaurant whilst you have dinner and then after everybody has finished the last session moves down into the bar. Having been to a very tradional fado house in Lisbon I have to say that the fado at O Cais comes very close to it in terms of style, presentation and quality.

The menu is a bit odd and limited but you should find something to please and there is no charge for the fado so it all works out as pretty good value if you want to sample real fado.

We were regulars when it was more of a Portuguese restaurant, very good piri piri, stews etc on cold days. still had the fado and lunchtime music sessions.
It was a real dissapointment when we took friends there to find that it had changed hands .
It sounds as if it has may have improved since then.
