Out and about - July 2011
Out and about - July 2011
I returned from carvoeiro today, and thought I would share what we experienced during our tenth, eighth and twelfth visits to carvoeiro (there are 3 of us!)
We eat out with our 5 year old, so tend to go early (around 6) and I was surprised that everyone told us we would need to book, but for reference the reality appeared to be this is only necessary if you are eating a little later (8--), for us we didn't find anywhere that was even half full at the time we went. This is our first July visit (first time of school hols tie in) and we were surprised how quiet everywhere was.
A selection of views from our trip:
Vimar - had a really nice meal here, steak, chicken piri piri, pizza for the little one - all as fresh and perfectly cooked as always - very friendly service and reasonable price.
3 Jotas (I think that's what it's called - where the fire was a while ago, right in the square) - initial views weren't great, I was sat next to the bin (which was hastily moved when I pointed this out), and our ordered couverts didn't arrive - however when our mains came we were very pleasantly surprised. Large fillet steaks EURO14 each cooked to perfection in a lovely pepper sauce. The meal was delicious and very reasonably priced.
O frango mulaco (I think that's what it's called - the new chicken place between carvoeiro and sesmarias) - very disappointed. The service was standoffish, I specifically ordered plain grilled chicken but received chicken which whilst not piri piri was smothered in garlic butter (I am intolerant to garlic), and the children's chicken fillet was the same. The piri piri chicken taster wasn't particularly impressed either. Desserts were nice but the mains and service really let it down. We won't be returning
Ma-Ja's - had a lovely meal here, not one for the portuguese purist, but as you can probably tell we aren't necessarily after fine dining, just decent good food which we get every time here. Service as friendly and excellent as always.
O Barco - ate here on our last night. I think it can get away with it a little due to it's amazing location it isn't the cheapest. Last night our food included lamb chops (which are so good that they are one of the talked about foods during winter months when considering holidays!), and grilled salmon with rice, which was cooked to perfection. Lovely meal, fantastic location, great service - and if the foods good then the price is right (EURO12 for the grilled salmon steak I think which is about right)
Porterade in Ferragudo - went to eat in the square in ferragudo so tried this place, herb crusted lamb (v nice), grilled chicken and children's pizza - nothing amazing but food nice enough, and service very good. Would go back, and love the location
O Teodósio (O Rei dos Frangos) nr Albufeira - 1 order of piri-piri, 2 orders of no piri-piri. Not sure what can be said really. Chicken, chips and salad, simple, reasonably priced but for me (us) the best grilled chicken or piri-piri we have found. Go here each visit and have never been disappointed.
Vale de Milho golf clubhouse - Went for snack one day and was disappointed, even for snacks. This place should be buzzing but compared to a few years ago is continually deserted. We paid much more than expected for below average food, the service was ok and very friendly but won't return to eat again
Snackbar Jomar - Would never have gone if we hadn't read about it on here, what a little gem for snacks/lunches. Very tasty food, great service and very cheap - will certainly be back so thanks for the recommendation!
Irish times - best breakfast in town - pretty good fish & chips too!
Also had a couple of take aways - pizza from Rocha Mar which was very nice but the guy clearly didn't want us there when he could serve people in, and take away chicken from the rocha brava take away - very big portions, tasty food and good prices.
That's a selection of where we ate and what we experienced, as per the note above, we have a young child so eat early on and we don't eat a lot of fish or seafood so have quite simple tastes, just want to pay a fair price for good food and service.

Hi holiday1, thanks for your review. Could you remind me of where Snackbar Jomar is again please? I've heard of it but can't place where it is. Thanks, Monty.

Hi
Yeah it's on the in-road, almost opposite where you can turn left and cut through onto the out road near the bottom of monte dourado. There is another one next door, not sure what that's like - but snackbar jomar had quite a few portuguese people there, very inexpensive, delicious and good service. Would recommend for a snack or light meal (though many were eating mains including some lovely looking stew type dishes). So as you come down the in-road it's opposite that junction, before you get to the post office opening.
Enjoy

Jomar added to Restaurant Map - under J for Jomar, not S for Snackbar
