Microsoft to work with Portugal to make economy more competitive
02.01.2006, 03:04 PM

LISBON (AFX) - The government of Portugal and US software giant Microsoft Corp signed an agreement to carry out 18 technology projects aimed at making the nation's economy more competitive.

The projects include providing technology training for police to help them fight cybercrime, the creation of computer training programs for students and the unemployed and the establishment of software development centres.

Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates said he hoped the partnership could eventually be extended to other areas.

No financial details were given.

The lack of competitiveness of Portugal's economy was underscored earlier this month when a new report by European Commission ranked the country's record on innovation in 18th place out of 25 EU member states.

I take back everything I have ever said about Microsoft - well almost everything.

Seriously though, that is good news. Lets hope it will make a difference.

Mmm isn't that wonderful of Microsoft? It's really good to hear that something positive is being done up in the annals of government. Let's hope we can see some real proof of this deal on the ground soon.

Now if only Microsoft can fix their crappy browser...
