and more information

Episode: 1 of 6 Tue 07 Aug 2018 7.30pm - 8.00pm Channel: ITV

Series overview

In this new six-part series for ITV, Julia Bradbury finds out if it’s possible to buy and renovate a home abroad for just £10,000. Some savvy sun worshippers claim to have paid just twice the £5,000 that an average family reportedly spends on their annual break away - to have their very own holiday home.

From Spain to France, and Italy to Bulgaria, some properties are up for grabs at unbelievably low prices. This series features Julia finding out whether the dream of a holiday home in the sun can really be achievable for the price of a second-hand car - by taking on her own fixer-upper in Portugal. Along the way she meets people who have done just that - using shepherds’ huts, troglodyte caves and even river boats to make their dream homes in the sun on a budget. Julia is helped by her friend, designer and salvage expert Max McMurdo, who uses his DIY skills to help Julia renovate her Portuguese retreat and takes on a challenge of creating his own holiday home on wheels in the UK for less than £5,000. But can they really achieve their goals on such tight budgets?

Episode 1

In the first episode, Julia visits Portugal where her internet searches have led her to two possible houses. Her first stop is the Algarve, but she soon finds that the further north you travel, the cheaper properties are. Her challenge gets off to a flying start when she secures a cottage for just £5,700.

She also meets Richard, originally from Somerset, who bought and renovated two shepherds’ huts for under £10,000 in Portugal. And Londoners Simon and Philip give a guided tour of their property in Bulgaria, bought for £7,000 in 2004.

Max finds a neglected old ‘80s caravan which he buys for £100, leaving him plenty of cash to spend on his mobile vacation home. For inspiration, he meets Ella and Tom from Devon, who spent their honeymoon in the motorhome they created from an old Canadian school bus for just £6,200
