Sad to report our villa was broken in to today while our clients were at the beach on the last day of their holiday.The thieves took the safe off the wall inthe master bedrom which contained passports,money etc. Access was gained via a small bathroom window with no bars,something we will now have fitted,also the clients did not set the alarm which would have at least created a bit of a racket.So once again a warning for people to be extra careful.....

Sorry to hear this Rayeileen. Not really what you need to hear is it? It's not just the burglary itself, it's all the inconvenience and hassle you're now going to have to put it all right.

There seems to be a modus operandi which involves forcing small windows to gain access and once inside opening patio doors for an exit route. Sadly as I found to my cost electric shutters on small windows offer no protection and the only answer is bars. Similarly sidelocking windows can be forced open more easily than centre fastening locks. I had good quality double glazed units but I was amazed how feeble the side locks were. I beefed these up and also fitted centre locks. All my small windows now have bars. Obviously nothing is going to keep a determined thief out but every deterrent helps.

I have friends living in 'rural Carvoeiro'; yesterday they were visited by the GNR and presented within an information pack in English about what to do if they have or suspect they have people on their property intending to break in.

the GNR took a GPS reading of their villa and a code number to quote when calling the GNR in the event of being confronted by robbers.

they said they're giving these packs to anybody not living on an urbanisation who might be vulnerable to a visit from the men in balaclavas.

that's exactly what we said, it's nice to feel a bit of extra protection and safety.

the sad side is that the problem is severe enough for the GNR to take these steps, and with the austerity cuts coming things will probably get worse

I have always been aware of the ease that some of the places I have stayed at can be broken into. I always do my own security check and then report back to the owner what needs doing. One main area of concern are side-locking windows, especially big patio door windows.

If you're going to have a safe, have it built into a cupboard (at the back of it in a dark corner if possible) or better still, bricked in. The longer it takes and the noisier it is the better the likelihood the thieve might be deterred. Certainly a blaring siren is going to make a difference - so it's a great pity the alarm wasn't activated.

On this subject would anyone know of a device that can be attached to a TV plug or wall that once it is unplugged or moved an alarm goes off. Unfortunately guests will not always turn on the alarm and I am trying to think of a way of an alarm going off if TV removed or unplugged.
