SAPO ADSL instructions

Post by jimmyp »

Hi all

I have just had a PT line installed in our villa which has the free SAPO adsl modem supplied with it - I am not in Portugal at the mo to test whether the modem & everything works - Anyone got any idea where I can get hold of an English translated version of the set up instructions so I can sort it out without resorting to swearing and blasphemy!!

Cheers

Hi James,
I went for the same deal end of last year, although I have since switched to a wireless modem purchased in the UK. I have very little Portugese, but managed most of the set up with the help of the disk supplied. I had one hiccup, and had to phone the help line. You can imagine my relief when after a lot "press button x" in Portuguse, a voice said "for help in English press button 8" or whatever. The guy spoke perfect English and had tremendous patience, with a not very computer literate English bloke. If I can manage it, I'm sure you can!

HI Barry

thanks for that - can i bother u with a couple of other queries - Do I have to use a portuguese multibanco card to top up for both phone calls and the internet?

Is the line rental invoiced as in UK? - if so I need to make sure that the bills are forwarded before they cut me off!!

Cheers

Hi James,
I pay by direct debit from my Millenium bank account, so not sure of other methods. The application was on-line, and not too difficult.

Hi James,

i'm looking for a solution to get adsl in Carvoeiro as well. The problem is, we basically don't need any telephone line or number, because we're only phoning over voip, even at our first home (germany) :)

But it seems to be impossible to get a pure DSL-connection in Portugal :(

How long did it take to get the PT line installed? Which SAPO-tariff do you have and which monthly dues do you have to pay for the PT line + for the DSL-tariff?

ben

P.S.: Do you know the kind of modem you got (manufacturer + type)? It should even be possible to install a modem from UK or somewhere else. If you do so, you may just have to switch the protocol of the modem to Annex A, if you have an analog line.

Hi Ben,
Not sure what progress James has made, but we had to have a phone line installed for the SAPO deal. We rarely use it, but it only costs about 10 euros a month for the line rental, so no big deal. The package depends on the speed and your usage. We went for a top-end package because when our son is over he tends to have a large download need. We simply replaced the free wired modem with a wireless one from the UK which connected itself without a problem. It's a Linksys 2.4 GHz, and works throughout the villa. And even in the garden, except the sun is normally too bright to see the screen on my lap-top. :)

Hi Barry,

thanks for your quick answer. I think we'll make the deal with the kit, too.
I already configured a wireless modem (fritzbox 7050) for the use in Carvoeiro, so we'll have the known environment + can directly start phoning + surfing, even in the garden :)

Maybe you can give me some more information, before i'm closing the contract :?

How long is the minimum duration? And if the PT line is cancelled, is SAPO ADSL cancelled automatically, too? Do you know if it's possible to upgrade the ADSL rates i.e. from tariff "free" to "1MB"? (Maybe the Voip-phones need a constant connection to internet to be reachable, so the time-limited tariff would'nt fit.)

Hi Ben,
The link to our house is fom a "pod" in the road through a phone line to the building. We had to have the line installed since the property had not previously been connected. Since the line is your internet access, without it you have a problem! But as I said previously, the cost isn't prohibitive. The deal was for 12 months if my Portuguese interpreted it properly. Otherwise I might well be signed up for life. :(

Hi All

Not made any progress really other than trying to get the manuals translated in UK before we go out at the end of August and try and connect the internet!! As I understand it I have to top the internet usage up first on a multibanco card which I cant get hold of until I visit the Bank after we get there - I fear they may be a day or so's cursing to be done before I get the thing up and running but hey ho at least I will be frustrated in the sun and not up to my neck in rain!!

If anyone has any tips about how easy it is to actually get the modem up and running any would be much appreciated

Cheers

I couldn't find a phone line for 10 euros a month. Minimum cost I could find was about 25 euros. I am coming to Cvo on Friday for a couple of weeks. Who do I need to go and see to get the 10 euro phone line? All I want it for is internet access.

Hi all!

@ fmm:
If you take a kit of PT (phone line) + SAPO (ADSL), the monthly fee for the phone line (15,32€) is reduced 4,99€ for 12 months.

@ Philip:
It differs on what you want to do. If i got the vodafone system right, it is a modem you connect with your PC or Laptop, to go online with over vodafone net. Should be no problem in Portugal as well, if you only need broadband by using your laptop + the vodafone net is stable in your area.

I decided to take a Kit (phone line + ADSL) from PT + SAPO (http://loja.ptcom.pt/loja/Produtos/Casa ... Net_Linha/). It seems to be the best solution for us, because we need stable broadband for surfing and phoning.

@ James:
Isn't it possible to pay by direct debit from a bank account?
If you really see problems in configuring the modem, you could even buy a modem in UK (with english manuals) and replace the supplied one. Or you call the support line. I already did, like Barry, and they do speak english and are pretty patiently

Thanks Ben - where do I buy this from - I would rather do it face to face. When I tried last year by phone, we ran into all sorts of difficulties as they wanted a portuguese phone number and I obviously didn't have one!

Sorry - that sounded like a really dim question. What I mean is, can i visit a shop somewhere and talk to someone rather than trying to figure it out over the internet which I know I can't do because of my address and non existent phone number.

As i rember it right, my dad told me there's an office of PT in Portimao...
I don't know, if there's even one nearer or in Carvoeiro....no, i just found this:
http://casa.telecom.pt/PTResidencial2/T ... t.htm#faro

What's up with your address, that you can't do it via internet?
If they really need a portuguese phone no., why don't you buy a portuguese prepaid card for your mobile phone - and there you are :)

I phoned with the support a few days ago + it seemed no problem at all to do it by phone or via internet....at least the woman told me so
The only problem i had, was that the line + ADSL have to be installed within 10 - 15 days. So, i have to wait 2 more weeks to close it + to be there for getting it installed.
