the yellow road

Post by martin »

its hard driving along some roads here, you know potholes with tarmac in-between..the camaras come along some time in summer and drops some hot tar in the hole and with the first heavy rains they pop open again.

so it is interesting to see an italian idea whereby under the road would be a yellow coating to alert road engineers that the road needs repair...problem is that a lot of roads would be yellow only

see here

They put yellow rings around potholes that are deep enough to require filling here. We had a couple on the entrance that weren't deemed deep enough, so when the yellow paint man had gone, I painted my own rings and the holes were filled. The repair only lasted a few weeks but that's the norm.

Its not just potholes we have an unsurfaced road near us which carries a lot of traffic, during the rains it became a river washing away much of the surface.Great fun for the summer, more shoes ruined.

My local council leader has come up with the idea of "Sponsoring a pothole" :!:
You pay so much money and when they come to fill the hole you have a little plaque stuck in it say in memory of a pet or whatever you want
Maybe you could put your hand prints in it like in Hollywood

If they did that here, Carvoeiro Clube and Vale do Milho would look like graveyards.
Not sure the amount tarmac around the plaques would allow for very safe driving though.

I saw, on the news earlier in the week, where a town in Germany are selling their potholes as prime real estate. An brilliant idea in my opinion. Each purchaser is responsible for the upkeep of their own pothole!

I noticed today from the "news"how lisbon has to pay thousands out in compensation to car owners because of pot holes...I wonder how much they pay out around here in the algarve

article here from news

Pot-hole damaged cars costing Lisbon thousands in compensation
13/3/2010

Drivers claiming compensation from Lisbon Town Hall for damage caused to their cars by pot-holes found on roads throughout the municipality are costing the council an average of 60,000 every year.

Because of this Lisbon council is now proposing to invest some €8.8 million in repairing and resurfacing 280 municipal roads. The number of people making claims rose from 470 in 2008 to 796, in 2009. Two years earlier, in 2006, 716 claims were made though subsequently fell in 2007 to 486.

Extensive works are planned to commence next year and should protect the city’s roads from deteriorating for a period of at least 15 years.

In related news, the cash-strapped German municipality of Niederzimmern is selling locals the right to contribute towards their roads’ repair by ‘sponsoring’ a pothole for €50 each. In return, the owner of the patched-up surface will see the spot engraved with their name.
