Rob,

i would do what guest suggested.

Come down for a few months to see if you really like it, get the feel for the place, get contacts and leads for a job, get all the paperwork you will need and if you still think it's a good idea, go for it.

I moved over nearly 3 months ago and I don't regret it one bit. It's very different from London but boy do I like it!

Good luck to you.

Rob ….If you are thinking of selling your home in London to buy a new one in Algarve (?)……. I’d say rent the London Property out for two years, go down to Algarve and try living in different parts… see what suits you, check out the job situation, whilst deciding what kind of property you want to buy and where.
You can rent a comfortable apartment somewhere away from the touristy parts long term (6 months, 12 months, 2 years) really cheap, and - assuming you do have London home - you will rent that out for a small fortune!!!
>>>>IMHO
(after two years off you may miss the ratrace!)

Funnily enough, I am another "Rob" looking to get out of the London ratrace and love the idea of living in CVO. If anyone has any more useful tips on the sort of work that is available (other than the usual bar-type jobs) it would be much appreciated.

RobM, it really depends what kind of job you are looking for.

I was really lucky because I got a job in Marketing 2 weeks after moving out here and I love it.

There are quite a few international companies which makes it easier if you do not yet speak fluent portuguese.

I guess the best thing to do would be to find out what field you are interested in working in and find out what companies are out there which would enable you to do so.

I do think that if you are going to move to Carvoeiro, you should not limit yourself to working around there. I started my job in Lagos but we have since moved to Alcantarilha which makes it easier for me but I didn't mind the drive into Lagos. The motorway here definitely beats the North Circular or the M25!

Oh tell me about it. I was gobsmacked when in Carvoeiro recently and was driving on the A22 at 9am with hardly another car on there. Bliss!

I currently work in the Sales and Marketing so I think I just need to do my research into what sort of employment there is in the Algarve for non-Portuguese speakers! That said, I would fully intend to learn as I went. I can but try......

Thank you very much for your helpful hints and keep them coming!

Hi Ellie, hello robM

I read your post about moving to the Algarve....and did you get there allready?

Ellie, it is still one of my dreams to go and live there but like Rob you need a job to maintain oneself and we have a newborn on da way so I might have to postpone this dream......... any vanancies for insurance salesmen? haha...

BTW Ellie thx for the tip on growing the olive tree!

Rob M,
As a hint, the big property developers, golf courses and spas usually employ english speaking people so you could try there.

Sales and marketing is what I also do and I got the job quite easily.

Funnily enough, I am another Rob. (waboab) the boab part being the Scottish version of Bob (shortened Robert.) lol.
Almost confused myself there.

I would love to take the plunge and move to CVO, at present I work full time with a car ferry company, but my most enjoyable work (sometimes) is as a part time web and Graphics designer.
The latter is what I feel could support me after the move.

Suppose we can only dream though.
(I'll be back there (CVO) in 10 days though) YeeeeeeeeHaaaaaaaaa.
