Schools and local community

Hi Guys

I hope all is well over there.

Because of recent events over here we are now considering leaving the UK to move to an EU country(would love the Algarve!), the issue we mainly have is our kids, we have a 5(nearly 6) and 3(nearly 4) year old. I was just wondering if there is an a community in and around Carvoeiro where families live, work and socialise? Also what are the public schools like, are they safe, ok with children that don't speak Portugese yet.

We just want the best life for our children and wondered if they would prosper better somewhere else and have a happier life, so if anyone has any info, opinions or comments that would be great!

Thanks

Chris

I see nobody has responded to you yet, I suspect because any reply could be voluminous,

my short answer is to suggest that you move to Carvoeiro in September on a 6 month rent, trek around the pre primaria schools to find one you like and give it a go; you'll soon find other parents, like minded people etc and get to see if you like it.

Thanks for the advice, yeah we thought maybe next September to give it a go as my son will still only be 6 and daughter would have had one year at school.

I could be completely wrong but when we are there life seems easier, more relaxed rather than here where it's all doom and gloom but then we are on holiday so might have something to do with it! :D

we lived in Carvoeiro for 10 years & brought up 2 children there so you won't hear me counselling against it BUT it is a big move, post crash employment has been really tough for folks, settling into local schools has mixed experiences, winter's are chilly & damp a lot, you really have to sample it; what not to do is sell up & pack your suitcases.

Sounds a bit drastic, and that's speaking as an ardent Remainer!

Sunman's comments are very pertinent : we are in CVO about 4 months of the year and love it. There is a good community spirit , but I can only speak of the older ex-pats and retired. Living and working there is something different....and may not be allowed under Brexit of course!

As for schools, the International School ( private) at Lagoa seems to have a good reputation. We know some people with children in the Portuguese education system, and they seem to be doing OK. If you PM me, I can give you some contacts to chat to .

Fingers crossed the new PM will sort the mess out!

Talking of sounding drastic Geoff !!!! Under what possible circumstances might living and working in Portugal not be allowed ?????? Project Fear is over it's time to move on.

I recall that Phil Hammond & Teresa May refused to give categoric assurances that EU Nationals ( currently working in the UK) could stay in UK , post Brexit, during the early stages of the Conservative Leader election process.....presumably to ensure this is a bargaining position so that it can be agreed with a quid pro quo....but if they didn't agree, then it would surely be doubtful for EU countries to allow UK people to work there.

But we'll have to wait and see......
