Lisbon - Which Train Station

Post by Caron »

If we get the train from Tunes to Sete Rios station in Lisbon (is this the best station to stop at for Rossio Square?)
- would it be expensive to get a taxi to Rossio square or is there a Metro station and
is it easy to navigate. Is the bus from Lagoa a better option? Would appreciate some info from any travellers!

Many thanks in advance.

Train from Tunes is excellent - pay a bit exxtra for 1st class - worth it. When you get to Lisbon you can buy a ticket that will cover metro and other ground transport in the city for an all in price. Can't remember the name of the card but the staff at the main stations are helpful and speak good English. If you want to see the city as Lisbonites see it, all the nooks and crannies that regular mass tourist groups never get to, then contact 'wehatetourismtours.com' - you will get a fantastic tour of Lisbon by fun locals who love the city and will share the secrets.

It's better to stay on to Entrecampos then metro or taxi from there, if it's your first time it's probably easier to get a taxi and not that expensive - there's a taxi rank outside the station

We used Oriente station to catch the train to Faro. Last year it cost €5 to cover all metro, bus, trams and elevators. We got it at the airport and it cost 50c extra to purchase the actual ticket. You just ask at the ticket desk for the number of days you want it for and he will load it up accordingly. It will cover Belem but not Sintra. You catch the train from Rossio square to Sintra. We used the metro to get from the Airport to central Lisbon and used the busses and metros after that. Well worth the money if you intend to move around at all. Agree with Rampage, purchase a 1st class ticket, worth the few euro extra. If you purchase online you can choose your seat number as well. AFAIK there is only 1 first class carraige and it was full on the day we travelled down to Faro. Enjoy Lisbon.

Train is far better comfort than coach. Try to get the tilting trains as they are better than standard intercity. I agree first class is worth the small cost.

If you want a more modern shopping mall and places to spend time then Orient is a good station. Metro is easy.

When we got the coach the driver kept dozing off while driving and was only woken by the rumble strips - last time I would ever use it!

Beware of Lisbon pick pockets though. My wife had her purse stolen. I know it can happy in any major city but it's the first city I've come accross that has a police station dedicated to tourists! When we went there all their business (of which there was a lot) was comprised of tourists that had had bags/purses/etc stolen.

I do not think that Lisbon can compete with Rome as far as pickpockets are concerned.
OH lost her bag within 30 mis of arrival, we too joined a long queue at the police station with other victims including a catholic priest .
Orienee is a much better choice of stations if you have time to kill.. There is a large shopping centre across the road and a little further will take you to th riverfront.

You can pre-book your tickets on-line at http://www.cp.pt English version available.
There is no actual car park but do as everyone else does and just park somewhere outside the station! We have done this before and had no problem.
