It's a big wide world out there EMM and everyone is being as competetive as possible in order to boost tourism, Portugal however seems, in many ways, to be putting obstacles in the way of increasing much needed revenue.
Many of the posters on this forum don't need convincing about how lovely the Algarve is but unfortunately would be visitors do!
Time to take off your rose coloured spectacles and put the one's on that you use to view life in the UK!

Portugal continues to be one of the cheapest holiday destinations in the various UK surveys.

But I am sure that some jonah will come on and contradict me.
Correct...........just googled "cheapest holiday destinations" & couldn't see the Algarve featured anywhere...........Jonah :)

Morning Widge - See below

Portugal is the cheapest place to eat and drink out in Europe, according to a new holiday price survey.

A three-course meal for a family of four with coffee, beer, and Coca-Cola costs £44.14, while you would have to pay £114.65 (two-and-a-half times more) if you were on holiday in Italy.

Even Spain, a firm favourite with British holidaymakers for years, could not compete with Portugal on price with the same meal costing £53.51 or 17.5 per cent more.

Debt-ridden Greece charged £55.40 – 26 per cent less than a year ago. In France the bill was £69.09 and in Florida £71.06.

The Post Office Holiday Barometer survey compared costs at six of the top resorts, including Torremolinos in Spain and Albufeira on the Algarve.

A spokeswoman said: “Hard-up families planning a break during the Easter school holidays will find that there’s intense competition to attract British holidaymakers. Portugal is now a lot cheaper than its neighbour Spain which will surprise a lot of people.

“Even hard-pressed Greece is not far behind when it comes to paying for a meal out. Yet it still cannot compete with Portugal on price.”

Post Office head of travel money Andrew Brown said: “A stronger pound against the euro is good news but resort costs can vary dramatically.

“So holidaymakers should look at costs of food and drink before choosing a destination.”

Yesterday we played at the new Espiche course 70 euros 2 balls plus buggy, OK a course in development and minimal facilities but we wanted to play golf so who needs a swanky club house etc.
The Morgado complex similar prices plus of course our local twilight promotions.
If you preference is for the Villamoura golf factory experience of want to tick off a list of course played then you will have to pay more but as always it is down to choice.
Perhaps choosy was the wrong word when it came to eating out. what I meant,t was try somehwhere different the area has a large number of places and price ranges , you may be pleasantly surprised.
Shopping again there are more than just Intermarche within a short drive and even their prices are getting more attractive.
We only use the tolls to get to Carvoeiro and the return trip so not an issue.
