Re: UK TV Abroad
Latest update is for a launch on the 15th Sept, so we should all know what we can or cannot receive by the end of 2013.

Yes, heard on Five Live yesterday that from October 2013 onwards the UK channels would not be available on mainland Europe. Presenter suggested getting the broadcasts via the internet!!
Re: UK TV Abroad
Don't feel I have a lot of faith with regard to TV via the internet. The only thing is, as such we will all be in the same boat. Wonder what the hotels and bars will do. Still feel this is all up in the air. Would not even mind paying the BBC some money to keep attached to the 'footprint'. Keep the information coming. My daughter goes to our villa about that time in September, so will have to warn her as we do not arrive until 12 October.
Still about 8 weeks yet. Longest time since the villa was finished. Got spoilt earlier this year with all our trips.
Re: UK TV Abroad
Internet via Satellite is probably the most reliable but expensive option if we do lose Freesat and Sky.
I have little faith in the current local internet network unless we can get high speed connnections and fibre optic , which is not that common in our part of the Algarve.
I would wait and see and certainly not be persuaded to part with any money for internet Tv boxes, smart Tvs etc etc until we all know what is happening. which won,t be for a month or two.

Re: UK TV Abroad
with the number of ex-pats there are in Spain, France, Greece,Canaries etc etc I would have thought that, whatever about the BBC, that commerial UK channels might be interested in 'piggybacking' onto the footprint of one of the satellites that cover southern europe. While I would like the choice, to he honest if I had even one Uk channel (accept no chance of an Irish channel
) like ITV, I would be happy enough.

EMM, I fear you may be in a dull spot in CVO, and not necessarily typical of the whole town. We're up on the West side and have an excellent 10mbs connection from MEO (quite expensive), but I also looked into Fibre Optic connections from 15Mbps upwards from Cabovisão. I know many people with this option.
I'm thinking that TV via Internet may be very viable - if necessary, but I still think we should wait and see.
As joesoap has noted, there are a few million of us out there with the same issue, so its highly likely that a solution will emerge.

We have Cabo internet as part of our package and get nothing like the advertised speed ( like most networks ) and it is not that cheap either. You may have fibre to your box but up to and within your property it is still good old copper wires.
Who knows Cabo and the other cable/internet suppliers across Europe will buy the UK signals and add them to their subscription list.
Internet TV will be regularised and probably end up costing as much as existing networks.
" Free TV " will be a thing of the past.
If we do lose FREESAT we will still have up to 20 channels in Engish via the Cabo TV network including BBC news and not being soap watchers it will not be that much of a hardship.
