Re: Hemingways
We were talking with locals and they are of the opinion govt is corrupt, lots of back-handers possible it's Arab money Bruce. Lots of waterside property apparently worth a couple of million per apartment, who can afford that these days. It really is a shame though as it was a lovely island. The Brit bars could possibly be a remnant of when the British navy were there. Lovely weather though and hotel was nice. Went out for a wedding in M'dina which still has it's character thank goodness.

I love Malta - there was always a lot of Libyan money going into that country 25 - 30 years ago.
Let's just hope we dont get the kind of bars in the Cvo that they have in Holland

Re: Hemingways
I was in Malta in 1982 for a Christmas holiday. There were loads of Libyans in the country at the time(not surprising due to Malta's locality).
One thing struck me about the Maltese people: they were all united in opposition to the Labour government out there as they were too long in power and were taking the people for granted. The Prime Minister was called Mintoff and another politician lady called, Miss Barbara, seemed equally prominent, They were suggesting at the time that there may be no need to call in future general elections! Hence the people were a tad annoyed about that!
The best thing Malta did was join the European Union. That gave them stability although at the time of accession they chucked out the Laboury party from power.
The Maltese have only one weakness! They take that rabble of noise, screeching, ear-aching, nerve tingling rubbish called the Eurovision Song Contest too seriously.
They didn't fight bombardment from the Nazis for freedom just to enter this!

Sorry Aitch, My fault, I went off topic and started a new one
Anyway back to Hemmie's, we'll be there for our usual pint 'just off the beach at mid-day' in two weeks and 5 days.
