One only has to look along the Algarve coastline on Google Earth to see the full extent of erosion caused by footfall. It is a matter of striking a balance, these boardwalks are an excellent idea, even more-so close to built-up areas where there will naturally be more traffic along the cliff tops, Algar Seco being a prime example.
Also, I'm very much warming to the notion of using it to dispose of troublesome elderly relatives......

anyone know how far along it is going..I think it's a brilliant idea especially for wheelchair user's or people who can't walk on uneven ground

I had a look at it on Wednesday, starts near the little church and ends just at the end of the car park at Algar Seco. Theres an huge amount of wood going into this walkway, looks good even at this early stage, not entirely certain that it will be entirely wheelchair friendly, hard to tell as it's still only at the 'foundation' stage. Not as long as the boardwalks in Alvor nor as level as it covers very uneven ground. Personally I would love if they authorities extended it as far as Tivoli (but accept it's highly unlikely.)

heini wrote:apart from being "user-friendly" the main reason for those boardwalks is to protect the fragile vegetation all along the cliffs and coast, like the National Park around Cabo Sao Vicente, and may also help to avoid further rock slides. I think the boardwalks are done very well and blend nicely into the environment.

When we were last ou there was little work being done, none of the decking had been installed, it certainly looks impressive and will be a real asset to the area when completed.

Had a look yesterday - Some of the decking has been done but no handrails yet. I think its going to be terrific when its done and it looks as though it'll be wheelchair and buggy friendly. Bleachers have been installed in two parts so it'll be good for sitting down to admire the view.

It starts at Algar Seco at the car park above Boneca bar, but then meanders towards town. Not sure precisely where it ends or will end, but somewhere near the church...
