Tolls illegal!!!!!

I used the A22 last month but didn't pay any tolls and haven't yet received a bill from the car hire company....what's the procedure for collecting unpaid tolls?

picked up pals at airport last thursday and drove along N125 instead of A22 - took max 10mins longer, didnt use as much diesel and found the scenery much better - (especially the girls waving at the side of the road around Albuferia!)

Certainly wont consider A22 with tolls again unless I'm pushed for time

Mid week in March is a very different time to high seasomn from mid june -mid sept.
Having taken 40 mins to get from Albufeira to Algarve shopping in the past it will always be the A22 for us.

Now that the tolls are a way of life (almost) and car rental companies have had time to take stock, what are they doing re the charges?
I usually hire a car in person when I arrive in resort, for 10 days usually, so travel to and from the airport doesn't bother me. When I pick up the car will there be a standard charge added by the company to cover tolls? Will they be worked out at so much per day, depending on hire period (i.e daily charge x10 in my case) or will they wait till the charges are levied (possibly after I am back home) and charge to my Visa card accordingly?
What have others found so far?
I notice that airport shuttle bus companies are adding an extra amount to their fares in respect of 'toll fees'. Sound like a nice little earner, charging everybody on board an extra few quid which is probably well in excess of what each trip along the A22 costs the minibus.

I spoke to the owner of a car hire company today.
He says they still havent had any bills in re the tolls, and when they went in to find out the outstanding tolls on some cars, some had 30 or 40 euros outstanding, with no way of knowing which client, owed what.
He hasnt been able to retrospectively bill departing clients, because they cant dis-aggregate the bills.

When I asked him what he would do, all I got was a shrug of the shoulders!!

Blimey! - and here's me thinking that the system would be all smoothed out by now. I won't make the usual comments about the 'Portuguese way', but even for them this uncertainty seems to be dragging on. We fly out in 5 weeks, please let it be sorted by then. To be honest over ten days I may use the A22 on around half of them, so paying for the full 10 would be a bit of a bind.

I asked an English based rep. for my hire company, she didn't have a clue what I was on about. So I think it'll be a case of "suck it and see".
