Wattsey, that happened to me in the same exact place. I also told the officer that I didn´t understand him and he called his colleague over who was quite nice. I always carry my passport and had all my car docs. The only issue was that our car registration is in Central Europe and quite confusing. I think he gave up on understanding it. He also checked my visa in my passport (US) and asked what I was studying. You can imagine my embarrassment when I switched to portuguese and told him that I speak a bit but his friend spoke too quickly for me...plus I was nervous. His expression was priceless. he waved me off and reminded me to buckle up. All in all, not a bad experience and way better than some other countries I have been to!
