Pros and Cons for using Intelsat (Armed forces satellite)

As this moment in time we can realign your dish to this satellite for between 50 and 150 euros depending where in the Algarve you are. In some cases the dish itself may have to be moved to allow the adjustment. In these rare cases we would have to charge to move the dish.
This system also needs a totally different box priced at 199 euros which will then give you back all your missing UK channels.
Now the downside. This satellite system is encrypted and the code could change two or three times a year. This would then mean you would have to call out and pay for an engineer to visit your property and load the new codes into your boxes. Charges are dependent upon where you are in the Algarve. Unfortunately we cannot honestly guarantee the future of this satellite, although it could prove to be a good alternative.
If you are happy with the above possibilities we can make the necessary changes.
249 euros for the box
75 euros for the dish realignment
150 euros if the dish has to be moved

Andy/Chris

Is the box 199€ or 249€ (you quote both prices in the post above) and do all the figures quoted include IVA??

Listening to Kiss FM Algarve this morning there was an advertisement for a bar in Vilamoura showing the Man Utd game tonight and the Chelsea game tomorrow - what channels are they showing these games on?

Are the bars in Cvo showing these games and if so - on what channels?

The Portuguese subscription channel "Sport TV" shows most of the games.

If you look at the SKY channels, you'll see that the only channels that have gone missing are the UK terrestrials...BBC,ITV,Ch4, so the bars and anybody else with a SKY Sports package is unaffected.

Are they still using the 'old' satellite for the SKY subscription channels? According to all the info I have looked at the 'footprint' of the new satellite does not reach the Algarve. When we were out there last week the guy who runs Harry's bar said they were expecting the SKY channels to disappear soon.

Joey - it's very difficult to get a clear understanding of the current position from the plethora of conflicting posts :o

From what you've said - it appears Sky is still being received (certainly at Harry's Bar) - is that the case everywhere?
Does it include the UK terrestrials today? If so - how?

This suggests that everything bar the UK terrestrials is available - is that the case?
If it is - why can some get Sky and others cannot?

I half heard a commercial on Kiss FM Algarve for a seminar at a Vilamoura venue where they will set out the options available for UK TV in The Algarve - anybody interested should contact them (KISS) to get further details.

If you have a SKY box you still get SKY channels but apart from a few HD no main UK ,BBC, ITV etc.
IF you have a Freesat box , NO main UK channels.
We visited friends who have the E150 IPTVbox and the E18/month subscription and although the picture is not a good as before they are content as they have the main UK channels back.
TV via the internet appears to be the only reliable way to receive the main UK channels.
Apparently the BBC is already making noises about a charge to receive TV this way ??

Given that they (BBC) know you are viewing from outside the UK - that would be easy for them to introduce. With the BBC under pressure to rein in their expenditure they will undoubtedly seek to generate revenue from every available source. Brits abroad hankering for news from home linked to a 'soap' addiction is a potential cash-cow.

ITV might be a very different proposition given their commercial bias. They announced their 2013 results yesterday and revealed a huge increase in profits driven mainly by the income from their production activities as well as an increase in advertising revenues and may prefer to leave access open - but they are a Plc and have shareholders to satisfy.

Regretfully, common sense does not always prevail and in these cash strapped times - the bottom line dictates everything.

The following web site across its various pages seems to do an excellent job of explaining was has happened, what might happen, what can be received via the various satellites at 28 degrees and some non-satellite options. There is also a good glossary that might help some people. Ploughing through the pages seems to suggest that Sky channels other than the normal BBC,ITV,Ch4 & Ch5 offerings are probably OK via Sky and might remain so - hence sport in bars should be ok.

The site is nothing to do with me so if what it says if different from your experience then tell them not me.

Farol - that's helpful - I think.

Can I test my understanding - Sky TV is available in Portugal using the standard receiver and dish and maybe elsewhere in Europe but the UK's terrestrial channels (BBC, ITV, C4 and C5) through the Sky platform are not?

If you want to watch the UK terrestrials you need to buy the €150 IPTV System and the €18 pm subscription?

Is that right?

Is BT Sport available on the Sky platform (413 & 414) in Portugal?
