What do you miss ?

Post by digger »

with food in mind, what do you expats miss about your home county? Of course you can get Marmite, Quaker Oats & PG Tips But what about:-
Fresh Basil.…. yes (nice in salads, my mashed potato especial etc.)
Cos Lettuce …..yes (serious lettuce that)
Cucumber….yes (never thought I could miss cucumber, but those fat little things in pt are just not the same)
New Potatoes…..yes (cant understand why you don’t get new potatoes in pt)
Supermarket Bacon ……no (oozes water in the pan, shrinks by half, tasteless ripoff....give me the pt stuff anyday)
British Bangers…….no (yuck…but I’m sure those pie-eating pigeon-fanciers will never agree)

I dont miss much at all Digger. But go along with you on the Jersey potatoes and Cos lettuce :P
Hate sausages period. Specially since my brother said 'you know theyre made of left overs such as lips' and he also mentioned some unmentionable parts of pigs.
I agree with you on that YUCK!!!!

I’m virtually a veggie these days; we have meat once maybe twice a week and that is nearly always pork. I would say that pt pork and bacon is better than in uk, but not sure about beef and lamb.
And Sandy yes I do like presunto (parma ham) and those slices of cooked loin at the deli are ok, but the regular pt ham I don’t rate

I miss the wonderful Algarvian grilled fish - particularly Golden Bream. Fish is plentiful here - but there isn't a restaurant around that knows how to cook it properly.
Another thing - I always stuff my suitcase full of sardine pate packs to bring back here with me - something else I miss... oh and that lovely gooey cheese in tubs - Quero? dipping your breadcrusts into it is the perfect comfort food.

See my plea under 'Pies'

Others are fresh pork pies (never mind what is in them - just taste them)
Shreddies
Fresh dressed crab from my favourite place in Bembridge,I.O.W..

Isn't it a bit of a shame that, when asked what we miss from home, most of us immediately rabbit on about food
