Fish Query

Post by Guest »

Hi, can anyone help clear up some confusion? I'm coming back to the Algarve in a week or two, and I'm very fond of a particular fish - it's a long silvery fish that looks a bit like an eel. I was told that in portuguese it's called "Espada". which I believe translates as "sword", but in the past I've ordered swordfish and been disappointed to receive a swordfish steak (from the big fish that's like a shark with a spike on its nose). Can anyone confirm what I should be looking for on a portugese menu to make sure I get the right one? Thanks

I have also had it referred to as "scabbard fish".

Espada is a black scabbard fish. I lived in Madeira for 4 years and it is the most popular fish on the island. It is a deep sea fish, quite ugly because when it is pulled out of the water its eyes pop out !!!
It is served in every restaurant and cafe normally with banana.

Ah, but Sandy - they are truly delicious when pan-fried. I'v only tasted the silver ones though. Nice taste and hardly any bones.
