Sandwich bar in CVO?

Post by Ellie »

Quite some time back on here (somewhere :? ) there was a lotta talk about some expats opening a sandwich bar in Carvoeiro...actually a sandwich & juice bar.
But I can't remember the outcome of the discussion :?

The big question was getting 'good' fresh bread as I recall. I usually buy integral/brown or rolls which I find more to my taste than the sliced stuff.

Wonder if a sandwich bar would be good investment? or perhaps a sandwich & juice stall?

I think that is a great idea, the only problem I see is the one thing I dont like about Portugal.......the quality of the bread.

In the main I find it too heavy and doughey. Not that good for sandwiches.
You can get that Bimbo stuff, which seems to be all cellulose and sugar, and totally disgusting.

Im sure if you set up a shop, you could find a supplier of decent bread. I know there is some decent stuff around, because I sometimes find it in restaurants. They also have french style French sticks in Inter Marche.

Im sure that somebody can tell me where to find nice bread. In 4 years I still haven't found it.

Hi Bruce,
yeah it was always something I missed very much during our residential time...a lovely fresh crusty loaf! :)
I remember someone telling me of a bakers in Portimao that sold bread similar to that in UK..but I never found it!

3 years ago I stayed in a cottage just outside Carvoeiro(a little way past Cepso station, on right hand side on main road towards Lagoa) and a bakers van used to deliver bread on a saturday morning. That was reasonable bread & cakes.

But as you say, apart from the French bread-type sticks Ive never found anything to match our bread here.
Apart from buying fresh rolls each day, I find 3 types of bread there, its either heavy stuff that goes off in a day(and you could build a rockery with it..) or wrapped stuff that never goes stale :? ...or sweet brioche type!

Hey, maybe an Expat could open up a Brit type bakery in CVO?..
someone who knows his dough!

Hi Ellie,

Yes that was my little dream of having the juice bar /deli.
I did look into it and to be honest was a bit put off by all the hoops you have to jump through!
I'd love to be able to open such a place but I'm not sure it would work.
And ploughing all my money into a venture which can only become the next casualty of the failed business syndrome.

Nice dream though

xxx

Still think its a good idea Thunderbolt.
The number of times I've been in town and fancied sitting on the beach with a snack for lunch..... There are only so many crepes you can eat
Sometimes for lunch I would like a really nice salad and a glass of wine, nothing too heavy but I struggle getting that, can you suggest anywhere I might've missed?
Hope to see you in Rascals next week, we come tomorrow for a month.

Hi Tricky - Jan here from Ma-Ja's restaurant on Rua do Casino. We may not have a fantastic view but we do offer really nice salads and baguettes!! We have often been told that our bread is "the nicest they have tasted in Carvoeiro" - So maybe you can come up and sample some of our food when you are over next week?!! :D It would be good to meet you too! :D
